What does an on call scheduler do?

An On Call Scheduler is responsible for coordinating and assigning shifts for employees or service providers who are available on an as-needed basis. They manage last-minute schedule changes, fill open shifts due to absences, and ensure adequate coverage to meet organizational needs. On Call Schedulers often use scheduling software to track availability, communicate with staff, and respond quickly to staffing emergencies. This role is common in healthcare, customer service, and other industries that require 24/7 coverage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call scheduler, and why are they important?

To thrive as an On Call Scheduler, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with scheduling or administrative operations, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with scheduling software, phone systems, and database management tools is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to remain calm under pressure help set top performers apart. These skills are vital for ensuring efficient coverage, minimizing scheduling conflicts, and maintaining smooth operations within organizations that rely on timely staffing.

What are some common challenges faced by an on call scheduler, and how can they be effectively managed?

On Call Schedulers often encounter challenges such as last-minute shift changes, staff shortages, and balancing multiple scheduling requests simultaneously. Effective time management, clear communication, and proficiency with scheduling software are key to managing these issues. Building strong relationships with staff and staying organized can help ensure shifts are covered smoothly, even during high-demand periods. Being adaptable and proactive in problem-solving is crucial to success in this dynamic role.

On-Call Onsite Technician

New Castle, IN

$20 - $22/hr

Full-time, Part-time, Per diem

Job description

On-Call Onsite Technician
This position provides on-demand, as-needed onsite technical support for end-users — students, teachers, support staff, and school administrators — at school buildings within a two-hour drive of the technician's home address. Unlike Five Star's full-time Onsite Technician role, this is a part-time, PRN (“as-needed”) position built for districts and clients that need periodic or intermittent onsite coverage, plus additional on-call dispatches, rather than a daily onsite presence.
The individual in this role must possess excellent communication and troubleshooting skills, prioritize requests effectively, and remain flexible and responsive to a variable, on-call schedule across a dynamic K-12 environment.
Essential Functions
  • Provide Tier I onsite technical support during scheduled visits and on-call dispatches, responding to issues submitted by school staff and/or students.
  • Coordinate availability and visit scheduling with the Head of Onsite Services, confirming visit windows, on-call windows, and expected response times.
  • Perform computer imaging, software installations, and technology inventory maintenance/repair during scheduled site visits.
  • Troubleshoot and repair various devices and peripheral equipment, including but not limited to iPads, MacBooks, Chromebooks, Windows laptops, Windows desktop PCs, and interactive whiteboards.
  • Work within Five Star's ticketing system to log detailed troubleshooting notes for each visit and escalate issues to higher-level technical support when necessary, collaborating until problems are fully resolved.
  • Communicate clearly with school personnel during each visit regarding ticket status, and with Five Star leadership regarding completed work and recurring issues.
  • Support seasonal spikes — such as device deployment/collection or back-to-school setup — on an as-needed, scheduled basis.
  • Uphold Five Star's quality-of-service standards on every visit, including single-visit or infrequent engagements.
  • Experience troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues; a problem-solving mindset; and a customer service background with excellent communication skills.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel within a two-hour radius of home address.
Position Details
  • Employment Type: Part-time / PRN, W-2 employee (non-exempt)
  • Coverage Area: Within a two-hour drive of the technician's home address; specific district(s) assigned accordingly
  • Estimated Frequency: 2–5 visits per month, plus on-call as needed
  • Dispatch Notice: At least one week's notice for scheduled visits; shorter notice may apply for urgent/emergency tickets
  • Reports To: Head of Onsite Services
  • Travel Radius: Within a two-hour drive of home address
