Position Description
Eastern University is a diverse, Christ-centered community preparing graduates to impact the world through faith, reason, and justice. The Network Support Technician, reporting to the Director of Technical Services, implements and manages the enterprise-wide network infrastructure including but not limited to LAN, WAN, Internet/Intranet, connectivity, network addressing, proxy services, remote connectivity, firewalls, virtual private networking and network security. This individual assists the IT Network Engineer in monitoring and maintaining the network and associated hardware and infrastructure. This individual assists with other information technology projects as required.
Position Responsibilities
The tasks and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Installs system patches and firmware upgrades on network equipment as needed.
  • Analyzes connectivity and resource availability problems and effects a solution in conjunction with hardware vendors and 3rd party partners.
  • Maintains and administers all physical networking equipment both wired and wireless.
  • Maintains backups of switch, firewall, and all other network infrastructure device configurations.
  • Installs and configures new network equipment including access points, switches and network appliances such as firewalls, bandwidth allocation devices.
  • Manages WANs and the campus LAN to insure connectivity for satellite offices.
  • Manages relationships with communications and related equipment vendors.
  • Works to create systems and procedural documentation.
  • Works trouble-tickets to assist end users.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Status:Administrative, full-time, permanent, on-premises, salaried.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree with a major in computer science, information science or five years professional experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with enterprise WiFi (Cisco & Meraki Networks) and 802.1x security preferred.
  • Experience with network security, network addressing, TCP/IP, configuration of switches and routers (Cisco and Meraki preferred) including access control lists, switches and VPN security protocols.
  • Experience with radius and DHCP strongly preferred.
  • A versatile individual with the ability to learn and implement new technologies is required.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills with attention to detail are essential.
  • The ability to think logically and communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, with both technical personnel and other nontechnical users and staff is essential.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently or in teams are essential.
Position requirements
  • This position is a combination of an office-based position working with a computer or laptop and hands-on work with hardware in a data center and in all wiring closets on the main campus and other campus locations.
  • Wiring closets are located in basements, attics and locations with limited accessibility.
  • Evening and weekend work is occasionally required to solve specific problems, upgrade services, or meet specific deadlines.
  • Remote monitoring is also required during specified periods.
  • A valid, current driver's license and car is needed to travel to other campus locations on an as-needed basis.

Adjunct faculty may be eligible for medical coverage under the ACA after an annual one year lookback review.
Part-time staff who are scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week schedule are eligible for employer contribution towards the retirement plan after one year of employment. Eligibility rules apply. Adjunct faculty may make employee deferral contributions towards the retirement plan.
Part-Time Graduate Assistant Coaches are eligible for participation in the Tuition Remission Coaches Program.
Temporary, Contractors and Seasonal Employees: Individuals in this status are scheduled on an as-needed-basis and are not eligible for participation in the University's benefits programs.
