What does a Monetization Director do?

A Monetization Director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to generate revenue for a company, particularly through digital products, advertising, subscriptions, or in-app purchases. They analyze market trends, oversee pricing models, and collaborate with product, marketing, and sales teams to maximize profitability. Their role often includes optimizing user experience to balance customer satisfaction with business goals, and they use data-driven insights to identify new revenue opportunities and improve existing ones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Monetization Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Monetization Director, you need expertise in revenue strategy, data analytics, and digital product management, often backed by a degree in business, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, A/B testing platforms, and CRM systems, as well as experience with monetization models, is essential. Strong leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and communication skills help drive strategic initiatives and align teams toward revenue goals. These skills are crucial for optimizing business growth, maximizing profitability, and adapting to evolving market opportunities.

What are some common challenges faced by a Monetization Director when balancing user experience with revenue goals?

A Monetization Director often faces the challenge of implementing revenue-generating strategies—like in-app purchases, ads, or subscription models—without negatively impacting the user experience. Striking this balance requires close collaboration with product, marketing, and UX teams to ensure that monetization initiatives are both effective and user-friendly. Continuous testing, data analysis, and user feedback are essential to refine approaches and avoid alienating the user base. Overcoming these challenges can lead to sustainable growth and improved customer satisfaction.

Job description

Must have: Experience in Programmatic Advertising
PubMatic is the leading AI-powered ad tech company delivering measurable advertising performance through an intelligent, unified platform that connects buyers, publishers, data partners, and commerce media across CTV, mobile app, and omnichannel environments.
About the Role:
We're seeking an Associate Director, Product Management, Monetization with programmatic advertising experience to join our growing team in Redwood City on a hybrid schedule. The Associate Director is responsible for driving and implementing product strategy for our SSP monetization capabilities within our Marketplace Demand product team. We are looking for an individual passionate about innovation and problem-solving who can own one of the core charters within our Monetization organization.
This is an exciting opportunity to:
  1. Own a mission-critical product charter at scale. PubMatic is one of the world's largest independent supply-side platforms (SSPs), and we're looking for an Associate Director of Product to lead a core area within our Monetization organization.
  2. Drive the systems that power our marketplace. You'll define the strategy and roadmap for products that govern how billions of bids flow through our platform, including bid throttling, traffic shaping, PMP optimization, and QPS management.
  3. Work at the intersection of programmatic advertising and applied AI. This role offers a rare opportunity to combine deep ad-tech expertise with machine learning innovation, helping shape the next generation of traffic optimization models and preparing the platform for an agentic, GenAI-powered future.
  4. Lead with visibility and influence. You'll partner closely with Engineering and Data Science leaders, present strategy and roadmap updates to executives, and represent PubMatic at industry events and forums.
  5. Solve internet-scale performance challenges. PubMatic processes more than 12 million inbound queries per second across 150+ demand partners. The platform makes routing and optimization decisions in under 10 milliseconds, creating unique opportunities to build high-impact, real-time systems at massive scale.

What You'll Do:
In this role, you will balance ongoing new feature development with the modernization of our existing technology to support our next-gen machine learning models for QPS management/traffic shaping. The ideal candidate has experience managing product delivery for platforms with dependencies across multiple teams, and is energized by solving challenges in an ecosystem being reshaped by GenAI-based industry disruption. You will own the vision, strategy, design, and execution for your area of our product portfolio:
  • Define and own the product strategy, roadmap, and execution plan for monetization products - including outbound bid throttling for DSPs, inbound traffic shaping, and PMP / deal-level optimization.
  • Own the roadmap for QPS management, including the next generation of ML products designed to drive better monetization and infrastructure efficiency.
  • Identify and implement AI/ML-driven solutions to advance our machine learning models, and help define the next generation of traffic-shaping ML.
  • Support all aspects of product success - identifying product opportunities, gathering requirements, defining specifications and key metrics - working closely with engineering, data science, commercial teams, and product marketing to ensure goals are met.
  • Perform competitive analysis and use the insights gained to drive prioritization decisions.
  • Build and communicate a clear product roadmap to clients, internal teams, and company executives, and represent the team with key industry peers across relevant industry forums.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to determine feature prioritization and manage the development backlog, defining and tracking KPIs to refine strategy and execution.

We'd love for you to have:
  • 8+ years of product management experience, preferably in Ad Tech.
  • Recent experience working with DSPs, SSPs, or other programmatic platforms within the digital media space, spanning web, mobile, and connected TV.
  • Familiarity with the OpenRTB protocol and more general technical concepts such as APIs.
  • Experience with ML-driven products - such as traffic shaping, bidding optimization, or QPS management - is a strong plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven leadership track record.
  • A fast learner, curious problem solver, and team player.
  • Exceptional client communication and interaction skills, including the ability to communicate with client and business teams to gather and validate
  • Experience working in media trading desks and agencies is a plus.
