What is a Mid Level Engineer?

A Mid Level Engineer is a professional with a few years of experience—typically between three to five years—in their engineering field. They are responsible for handling moderately complex tasks, collaborating with teams, and often mentoring junior engineers. Mid Level Engineers are expected to work independently on projects, solve technical problems, and contribute to the design, development, or maintenance of systems or products. Their role bridges the gap between entry-level positions and senior engineering roles, combining technical expertise with growing leadership skills.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A mid-level engineer can potentially earn $10,000 a month through specialized skills in software development, engineering, or IT, often requiring experience and proficiency with tools like programming languages or engineering software. High-paying roles in these fields typically emphasize skills and certifications over formal degrees, especially in tech industries and freelance consulting environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mid Level Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mid Level Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, hands-on project experience, and typically a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with industry-standard software tools, such as CAD programs or coding languages specific to your field, and certifications like EIT or PMP may be required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork skills set standout candidates apart. These competencies are essential for managing projects efficiently, collaborating across teams, and delivering innovative engineering solutions.

What is the difference between Mid Level Engineer vs Junior Engineer?

AspectMid Level EngineerJunior Engineer
Experience2-5 years of relevant work experience0-2 years of experience or entry-level
SkillsProficient in core technical skills, able to handle projects independentlyBasic understanding, requires supervision and guidance
ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop, and troubleshoot projects; mentor interns or junior staffAssist in tasks, learn on the job, and support senior staff
CertificationsOften required or preferred (e.g., PE, relevant industry certifications)Typically not required

The main difference between a Mid Level Engineer and a Junior Engineer lies in experience, skill level, and responsibilities. Mid Level Engineers are expected to work independently on complex tasks, while Junior Engineers focus on learning and supporting more experienced staff. Employers seek Mid Level Engineers for their ability to contribute immediately and handle projects with minimal supervision.

What are some common challenges faced by mid-level engineers when transitioning from individual contributor tasks to mentoring junior team members?

Mid-level engineers often find themselves balancing their own technical responsibilities while starting to guide and mentor junior colleagues. This transition can be challenging as it requires strong communication skills and the ability to provide constructive feedback without micromanaging. Additionally, mid-level engineers may need to learn how to delegate tasks effectively and prioritize team goals alongside their individual work. Successfully navigating these challenges helps build leadership skills and prepares engineers for more senior roles in the future.

What do mid-level engineers do?

Mid-level engineers design, develop, and test systems or products within their field, often taking on more complex tasks than entry-level roles. They collaborate with teams, troubleshoot issues, and may mentor junior staff while using tools like CAD, programming languages, or engineering software. Their responsibilities typically include project planning, problem-solving, and ensuring quality standards are met.

Ideal candidates will have prior experience at an engineering, architecture, or consulting firm and a strong desire to deepen their technical skills, including performing building evaluations and investigations and developing the technical documents needed to repair identified issues.
In addition to technical development, this role provides a pathway to grow as a seller doer, balancing hands-on project work with client interaction, relationship building, and contributions to business development. Whether you already have seller doer experience or are eager to learn how to become one, you will be supported in developing the confidence and capabilities needed to engage clients, help identify opportunities, and contribute to the growth of our practice.
Responsibilities:
  • Act as a seller-doer by balancing technical project work with client engagement and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Evaluate building enclosure systems (e.g. cladding, fenestration, curtain wall, air barrier systems, roofing, waterproofing).
  • Preform forensic assessments of building enclosure failures, including field diagnostic, testing and reporting.
  • Prepare project deliverables such as proposals, reports, technical specifications and repair or replacement details.
  • Oversee various aspects of projects, such as project schedule, deliverables, fees, and invoicing, and provide direct assistance to ensure timely project execution.
  • Productively interact with client representatives and SME subcontractors.
  • Collaborate with group to develop practical recommendations for the client.
  • Support the growth of building enclosure services by staying engaged with your professional network and helping cultivate new client connections.
  • Help maintain strong client relationships through reliable project delivery, responsive communication, and day-to-day collaboration.
  • Work with junior and senior level staff to perform day-to-day project tasks.
  • Contribute to company-wide objectives through involvement in office and company development activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, Building Science, or related field.
  • Pursing or have achieved RA or PE.
  • Five (5) plus years of similar experience.
  • Excellent technical, written, graphical and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent communication, report writing and customer relations skills.
  • Ability to adapt to new challenges and learn new concepts.
  • Desire for continuous learning.
  • Work well with others, courteous, patient, and respectful.
  • Personal awareness of role as an SME ambassador.
  • Fortitude required to stick with a problem until solved.
  • Open-mindedness to opinions of others.
  • Ability to work overtime, including weekends on an as-needed basis.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds, stand for long periods of time, work from heights, work in tight spaces and inclement weather.
  • Ability to work in an efficient and organized manner independently and with a team.
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Willingness to travel to cover out-of-town overnight projects. A valid driver's license (good driving record) is required.

Benefits:
