Job description

The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a structural technician/designer to join our Duluth team. In this hybrid role, you will work with project teams to provide computer-aided drafting expertise, primarily using AutoCAD software. Typical duties may include data collection, planning, and problem solving related to structural design. Project work will include drafting the design of foundations and supports, steel framing, access platforms, stacks, pumping and piping systems, industrial equipment, conveyor systems, and various details.
A successful person in this role is flexible, collaborative, and demonstrates strong initiative. The ideal candidate enjoys working both independently and as part of a team, communicates effectively, and adapts to changing schedules to meet deadlines and client needs.
Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Technical knowledge: proficient in AutoCAD to create detailed drawings. Practical design knowledge of steel and concrete structures, such as buildings, dams, hydraulic structures, equipment supports, foundations, retaining walls, and other similar structures, will be required as well as the ability to visualize three-dimensional relationships from two-dimensional views.
  • Interpersonal savvy: effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and clients to align technical work with project objectives while fostering strong, productive working relationships.

About the opportunity
  • Hybrid: this position is based out of Barr's Duluth, Minnesota, office. A hybrid work arrangement may be considered, allowing time split between the office and a home office.
  • Travel expectation: occasional field visits to client sites; travel percentage will vary by project.
  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction, manufacturing, or rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: two-year technical certificate or equivalent experience and/or coursework directly related to the job responsibilities described above.
  • Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience related to the job responsibilities described above.
  • Software: proficiency with current versions of AutoCAD.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)
  • Experience with 3D software such as Revit, CADWorx, Solidworks, etc.
  • Familiarity with a variety of structural systems, including heavy steel framing, concrete foundations, and concrete and masonry walls.
  • Experience with drafting and design in other engineering disciplines, such as mechanical, civil, or electrical

Compensation: anticipated range of $23.00-$35.15/hour. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as non-exempt (hourly) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
