What does a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer do?

A Mechanical Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring that mechanical systems and equipment in a facility operate efficiently and reliably. Their duties typically include inspecting, servicing, and repairing machinery, as well as developing maintenance schedules and troubleshooting mechanical issues. They also work to minimize equipment downtime, improve system performance, and ensure compliance with safety standards. Mechanical Maintenance Engineers often collaborate with other engineering and technical staff to implement preventive maintenance strategies and optimize production processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, you need a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance, typically supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), diagnostic tools, and relevant certifications such as CMRP or OSHA safety training is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safe, efficient operations.

What is the difference between Mechanical Maintenance Engineer vs Mechanical Technician?

AspectMechanical Maintenance EngineerMechanical Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fieldDiploma or technical certification in mechanical maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, plan, and oversee maintenance strategies in industrial plantsPerform hands-on repairs and routine maintenance tasks
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, power plants, oil & gasFactories, plants, equipment servicing

While both roles focus on mechanical systems, Mechanical Maintenance Engineers typically handle planning, troubleshooting, and overseeing maintenance projects, whereas Mechanical Technicians perform the actual repairs and routine maintenance tasks. The engineer's role is more analytical and supervisory, while the technician's role is more hands-on and operational.

What are some common challenges Mechanical Maintenance Engineers face when working with older equipment?

Mechanical Maintenance Engineers often encounter challenges maintaining and troubleshooting aging machinery, as parts may be difficult to source and older systems might lack up-to-date documentation. This requires creative problem-solving and a proactive approach to preventive maintenance to minimize downtime. Collaborating with vendors, sourcing alternative components, and upgrading systems while keeping production running are typical aspects of the role. Ongoing communication with operations and production teams is essential to prioritize repairs and schedule maintenance efficiently.

You will apply strong electrical and mechanical skills to troubleshoot issues, perform root-cause analysis, and support continuous improvement in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical and mechanical maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on production lines, machinery, ovens, and related equipment.
  • Conduct detailed root-cause analysis on issues involving PLCs, sensors, cameras, machine control wiring, motors, and variable frequency drives, and document findings in maintenance reports.

  • Support rigging, piping, and machine building or installation activities as needed to install or relocate equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ensure all work complies with safety procedures, including proper lockout/tagout practices, and promote a safe and clean working environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, findings, and corrective actions to support continuous improvement and equipment reliability.
  • Participate in and support a strong preventative maintenance culture by completing scheduled inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and component replacements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities to improve equipment performance, reliability, and uptime.
Essential Skills

  • Experience with piping and rigging for equipment installation, relocation, or modification.
  • Machine building and installation experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with maintenance, operations, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage multiple maintenance tasks and priorities.
Why Work Here?

You will join a stable, niche manufacturing organization that emphasizes preventative maintenance and long-term reliability. You will work in a maintenance team that values experience and continuity, supported by leadership with many years of tenure and a deep understanding of the operation.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean industrial manufacturing facility with operations spread across three buildings.
