Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer at our East Chicago, Indiana location. Ideal candidates enjoy working in innovative, challenging environments and are willing to constantly raise the bar and create what is next. Mechanical Engineers develop solutions and implement projects that improve the process and reliability for the plant, along with working collaboratively with our bargaining unit, operations teams, and outside contractors. We have multiple openings in the plant.
Summary of Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
  • Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills.
  • Continuously improve equipment reliability through best maintenance practices.
  • Perform detailed technical calculations pertaining to equipment and mechanical computations and communicate with team members to resolve any questions or issues as needed.
  • Recommend and/or perform predictive, preventative, and emergency maintenance on equipment.
  • Resolve equipment malfunctions, including those requiring scheduled shutdowns or breakdown action.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Manage the planning, scheduling, and cost controlling of maintenance and engineering projects.
  • Manage technical aspects of assigned projects in accordance with customer contract requirements, budget, and production schedule. Seek methods or procedures that reduce costs and/or increase production efficiencies.
  • Complete project responsibilities for design, specification, review and development of mechanical equipment or systems.
  • Analyze current operating performance and standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Supervise a crew of hourly maintenance employees, and uphold and enforce safety, environmental, job procedures, and maintain general discipline of the crew.
  • Communicate with upstream and downstream operations and non-Cleveland-Cliffs contractors to coordinate work, deliveries, and service.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technologyfrom an accredited school.
  • Proven communication (verbal and written), analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a hot, dusty environment. Climbing stairs, ladders, and walking inclines. Able to work/walk safely on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to perform duties on different shifts for a multi-level organization which operates 24/7.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineering experience in steel mill, manufacturing, process, production, or equivalent facility.
  • Maintenance background with steel industry experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a heavy industrial environment.

Relocation assistance may be considered for highly qualified candidates from outside the local area.
