How does a Mechanical Engineer Manager typically balance technical project oversight with team leadership responsibilities?

A Mechanical Engineer Manager is responsible for guiding technical project execution while also managing the professional development and workload of their engineering team. This balance often involves delegating tasks according to each team member's strengths, facilitating communication between departments, and addressing any challenges that arise during the project lifecycle. Managers typically hold regular meetings to monitor project progress and provide mentorship, ensuring that both technical quality and team morale remain high. Effective time management and prioritization are key skills in successfully navigating these dual responsibilities.

What is the difference between Mechanical Engineer Manager vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectMechanical EngineerMechanical Engineer Manager
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; PE license often preferredBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; PE license usually required; leadership experience
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, testing in labs or office settingsOversees teams, manages projects, coordinates with departments
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, HVACEngineering departments in similar industries, with added managerial responsibilities

While Mechanical Engineers focus on designing and analyzing mechanical systems, Mechanical Engineer Managers oversee teams, manage projects, and coordinate engineering activities. The managerial role requires leadership skills and experience in project management, in addition to technical expertise.

What does a Mechanical Engineer Manager do?

A Mechanical Engineer Manager oversees teams of mechanical engineers in designing, developing, and testing mechanical devices and systems. They coordinate projects, ensure that design specifications are met, and manage budgets and timelines. Additionally, they serve as a bridge between engineering teams and upper management, helping to translate technical needs into actionable business objectives. Mechanical Engineer Managers are also responsible for mentoring staff, evaluating performance, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mechanical Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, project management, and a relevant engineering degree, often accompanied by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with CAD software, finite element analysis tools, and project management systems like MS Project or Primavera is typically required. Strong leadership, decision-making, and interpersonal communication skills help you effectively guide teams and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently delivering complex engineering projects while ensuring quality, safety, and team performance.

Mechanical Engineer

Hyperion Solutions

Richmond, IN โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Job description

Hyperion Solutions is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer for our Elevator Equipment location, in Richmond IN. This position will be a key contributor to our manufacturing process by playing a vital role in designing and developing cutting-edge mechanical solutions that drive our companyโ€™s success.

The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical design capability with direct experience in hydraulic systems, fluid power, or mechanical power systems. Elevator industry experience, especially with hydraulic elevator systems, would be a major differentiator.

This role will be expected to become EECOโ€™s go-to technical resource for jack and power unit application support, application calculations, product troubleshooting, and quality-related technical issues. A major focus of the role will be hydraulic valve design, including the ability to independently design new hydraulic valves or significantly improve existing designs. This is a product development engineering role, not a production/process/materials engineering role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a highlevel mechanical engineering resource for EECO hydraulic elevator products, especially jacks, power units, and hydraulic valves.
  • Develop into the site subject matter expert for jack and power unit application support, including application calculations and technical troubleshooting.
  • Independently design new hydraulic valve concepts and/or significantly improve existing hydraulic valve designs.
  • Support product innovation related to hydraulic elevator systems, fluid control, valve performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support quality investigations and corrective actions related to hydraulic components, applications, and field or manufacturing issues.
  • Write, execute, and document engineering test plans for hydraulic components and systems.
  • Use simulation and analysis tools to support design decisions, product validation, and pressurecontaining component evaluation.
  • Support manufacturing as needed, especially in the areas of testing, welding/fabrication, machining basics, and assembly troubleshooting.
  • Improve product design documentation, including drawings, specifications, calculations, BOMs, and engineering records.
  • Apply designformanufacturability principles to new and existing product designs.
  • Read and interpret regulatory, code, customer, or internal requirement documents and translate those requirements into engineering designs and documentation.
  • Work within common engineering processes such as ECOs, revision control, design reviews, validation testing, and controlled release of engineering documentation.
  • Mentor and train lowerlevel engineers and drafters where appropriate.
  • Act as a technical lead for Richmond engineering activities until a formal local engineering management structure is established.
  • Required Experience and Skills
  • Mechanical engineering product development experience.
  • Strong mechanical design capability with experience in fluid power, hydraulic systems, mechanical power systems, or similar products.
  • Ability to independently design or substantially improve hydraulic components, especially valves.
  • Experience using 3D CAD. SolidWorks is preferred, but experience with other major 3D CAD platforms is acceptable.
  • Simulation experience required; specific tool is less important than demonstrated ability to use analysis to guide engineering decisions.
  • Ability to write and execute engineering test plans.
  • Strong designformanufacturability mindset.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and implement technical requirements from codes, standards, specifications, or customer requirements.
  • Working knowledge of engineering change control, revision control, and structured engineering release processes.
  • Ability to support manufacturing and quality issues in a handson production environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and leadership teams.
  • Job Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field required
  • 710 years of proven experience in mechanical design within the elevator industry preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience, with a track record of successfully managing and developing engineering teams
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and other relevant engineering tools.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with simulation and analysis tools for stress, thermal, and tolerance analysis.
  • Excellent problemsolving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities for team collaboration and client interaction.
  • Experience with project management, from concept to completion, is a plus.
  • Preferred / Differentiating Experience
  • Elevator industry experience, especially hydraulic elevator systems.
  • Hydraulic jack, cylinder, power unit, or valve design experience.
  • Experience with pressurecontaining components or pressurevesseltype analysis.
  • Experience with tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with hydraulic testing, performance validation, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with ASME A17.1 or other elevatorrelated codes and standards.
  • Professional Engineer license. A PE license would be a major plus and may justify a higher salary range.
  • Prior experience acting as a technical lead, mentor, or informal engineering leader.
  • Benefits
