How much do materials engineer jobs pay per year?
What Is the Job of a Materials Engineer?
As a materials engineer, you develop, test, and process new materials. You may create new types of plastic, metal, or ceramic materials for use in various applications. You work with nanomaterials and other unusual substances to create products that meet specific chemical, electrical, or mechanical requirements. Depending on the company's needs and the status of a material's development, you typically work in a laboratory or an office setting. Many potential materials are modeled on computers before attempting manufacture, so familiarity with design software is paramount.

What is the difference between Materials Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?
| Aspect | Materials Engineer | Mechanical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or related field; often includes certifications like ASM certifications | Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; PE license may be preferred |
| Work Environment | Research labs, manufacturing plants, quality control | Design offices, manufacturing facilities, testing labs |
| Industry Usage | Materials development, failure analysis, quality assurance | Product design, systems, and machinery development |
Materials Engineers focus on developing and testing materials used in products, while Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical systems. Both roles often collaborate but serve different core functions within manufacturing and product development industries.

Job description
Team Overview
Prysmian Group is the world leader in energy and telecom cable systems, with 30,000 employees across 50+ countries. Our materials engineering teams play a critical role in developing, testing, and improving the compounds, polymers, and materials that power our cable technologies. These teams support manufacturing, R&D, quality, and product development across North America.
We are hiring Materials Engineers at multiple Prysmian locations. These roles are ideal for engineers who enjoy handson lab work, analytical problemsolving, and crossfunctional collaboration. Whether you're analyzing polymers, improving formulations, supporting plant trials, or troubleshooting materialrelated issues, you'll be part of a team that directly impacts product performance, reliability, and innovation.
Role ResponsibilitiesConduct material and polymer characterization using techniques such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, XRF, and microscopy.
Support manufacturing and R&D teams by analyzing raw materials, compounds, and finished products to resolve technical issues.
Develop and refine test methods, SOPs, and material evaluation procedures.
Interpret data, prepare technical reports, and communicate findings to engineering, quality, and operations teams.
Participate in plant trials, troubleshoot materialrelated problems, and recommend improvements to formulations or processes.
Maintain lab equipment, ensure data integrity, and uphold safety and quality standards.
Collaborate with internal customers across multiple plants and business units to support ongoing projects and longterm development initiatives.
Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, or Materials/Polymer Engineering.
Handson experience with material or polymer testing and characterization.
Strong analytical and problemsolving skills with the ability to interpret technical data.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a lab and plant environment.
Clear communication skills for reporting results and partnering with crossfunctional teams.
2+ years of industrial experience in materials, polymers, or related fields.
Experience with cable, wire, plastics, extrusion, or compounding environments.
Familiarity with advanced analytical tools (FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, DMA, XRF).
Background supporting manufacturing troubleshooting or process improvement.
Experience developing or updating test methods, SOPs, or material specifications.
