A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PAVEMENT MARKING LABORER
As a Pavement Marking Laborer, your role will be essential in assisting with the execution of pavement marking tasks across a variety of road construction environments. You will help lift, carry, load, and unload materials like pavement marking materials, signs, barricades, and barrels. You will prepare and clean the work areas before and after pavement markings are applied, ensuring the job site is safe and organized. Additionally, you will assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of various pavement markings, including epoxy striping, thermoplastic, MMA, and permanent tape.
Your role will also involve operating hand grinders to remove old markings, interpreting engineering plans related to pavement marking, and supporting the layout of roadways for marking. You'll be working closely with your supervisor to ensure the proper procedures are followed and that the project progresses as scheduled. You will help maintain equipment and vehicles, ensuring they are cleaned and in good working order before each job. This may include transporting materials and equipment to and from job sites as needed.
You will also be responsible for keeping accurate job logs and returning them to your supervisor daily, ensuring that all tasks are completed within time constraints. Communication with the direct supervisor is key to ensuring they are informed on the project's progress and that all company policies are followed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
To be successful in this role, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. You will need to obtain a Class B CDL license within 12 months of employment, including any necessary Hazmat and Tanker endorsements, and maintain a clean driving record. The position requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively and perform physical tasks such as reaching overhead, bending, kneeling, and twisting. You should be comfortable working in outdoor environments and extreme weather conditions and have the ability to walk long distances and drive for extended periods of time.
Flexibility is essential, as this role may require working varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and travel overnight for extended periods. You must also be willing to work in a potentially hazardous environment near traffic. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team are important. You should also have the ability to read and write clearly and legibly.
