What is a marketing contractor?

Marketing contractors are independent professionals or agencies hired by businesses to execute specific marketing projects or campaigns on a contract basis. Unlike full-time employees, they typically work for a set period or until the completion of a project. Their responsibilities can include tasks such as market research, digital marketing, content creation, advertising, and strategy development. Businesses often use marketing contractors to access specialized expertise, manage workload spikes, or reduce overhead costs. Marketing contractors may work remotely or onsite, depending on the client's needs.

What types of projects and clients does a marketing contractor typically work with, and how does this affect daily responsibilities?

As a Marketing Contractor, you may find yourself working with a diverse range of clients, from startups to established corporations, across various industries. Project scopes can include campaign management, digital strategy, content creation, or market research, depending on client needs. This variety means your daily responsibilities can shift frequently, requiring adaptability and strong communication skills. Working as a contractor often involves collaborating remotely with client teams, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and maintaining clear documentation of deliverables and timelines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marketing contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marketing Contractor, you need expertise in marketing strategy, campaign management, and content creation, often supported by a degree in marketing or related experience. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, CRM platforms, social media schedulers, and certifications such as Google Ads or HubSpot can be highly valuable. Strong project management, communication, and adaptability enable you to meet client needs and manage multiple projects effectively. These skills ensure that you can deliver measurable marketing results and build strong client relationships in a dynamic, project-based environment.

Job description

Marketing Traffic Manager
B2B Marketing Agency | Project Coordination & Traffic Management
Own project coordination and traffic management for an established B2B marketing agency (since 2009) serving professional services firms. Track timelines, enforce deadlines, route assignments across an implementation team of 10-15 specialists, monitor budgets, and make sure nothing sits idle in anyone's queue. This is a coordination and verification role -- you keep the work moving.
This is a primarily remote contractor role with variable hours based on workload. Tampa Bay area candidates preferred; open to qualified candidates in other US locations.
Key Skills: Project Management | Traffic Management | Monday.com | Resource Allocation | Budget Tracking | QC/Quality Verification | Process Development | AI Tools
ABOUT MARKETING DIRECTION
Marketing Direction is a strategic B2B marketing agency established in 2009, specializing in comprehensive marketing solutions for professional services firms. We're known for our trademarked Marketing Direction Strategic Blueprintยฎ methodology and Detailed Marketing Action Plans (DMAPs) that provide clients with clear, transparent roadmaps from strategy through execution.
Company Values: Action-Oriented, Strategic, Passionate, Innovative, Results-Driven, Expertise
THE OPPORTUNITY
Marketing Direction seeks a Traffic Manager to own operational coordination across client accounts. You are the connective tissue between our account managers and our implementation team. Account managers own the client relationships and strategic direction. Specialists own the execution. You own the flow between them.
This is one of four defined project roles in our operating model: Lead Marketer (account manager), Project Owner (owns a specific project), Traffic Manager (operational coordination), and Project Team (execution). You may interact with 10-15 team members, but your core function is routing account manager projects across the implementation team.
This role is perfect for:
  • Agency project managers or traffic coordinators who thrive on keeping multiple projects moving simultaneously
  • Organized operators who build systems that prevent problems rather than managing fallout
  • People who notice when a task has been sitting untouched and act without being told
  • Project Management platform power users who configure automations, dashboards, and alerts -- not just check boxes
  • Contractors comfortable with variable hours and a team of fellow contractors
  • Communicators who send one consolidated message with priorities, links, and actions -- not tool notification floods

This role is NOT a fit if:
  • You want to execute marketing work (write copy, design, run ads, build campaigns)
  • You need guaranteed minimum hours or predictable weekly volume
  • You wait to be told what to do rather than monitoring and acting proactively
  • You default to tool notifications instead of direct, human-context communication
  • You treat deadlines as targets rather than commitments
  • You need positional authority to get things done (this is influence through relationships, not hierarchy)

WHAT YOU'LL DO
Project Setup (before kickoff)
  • Create project boards in Monday.com under the correct program category
  • Create Dropbox folders with standard sub-folder structure
  • Gather reference materials (brand docs, prior deliverables, relevant data) and organize in project folder
  • Verify team assignments, scope definition, and estimate approvals are complete before kickoff
  • Consolidate individual team member estimates into a single document for project owner review

During Execution
  • Route project assignments to the right specialist based on skillset and capacity
  • Manage timelines, dependencies, and deliverable tracking for concurrent client projects
  • Conduct first-pass QC on deliverables before they advance to project owner review (brief-against-deliverable check, not technical review)
  • Route deliverables through the approval chain
  • Monitor hours against approved estimates; enforce budget check-in requirements
  • Flag out-of-scope work for independent estimation and approval before additional work continues
  • Escalate when a team member's deliverable is past deadline
  • Monitor cross-account capacity and flag resource constraints
  • Resolve operational bottlenecks proactively before escalation
  • Verify deliverables in production after deployment (links, forms, functionality)

Communication and Reporting
  • Provide weekly account reports to each account manager: project status, hours against estimates, upcoming deadlines, items requiring attention
  • Send human-context communications for approvals and status -- direct messages explaining what needs attention, where to find it, and by when
  • Consolidate multiple review items into a single prioritized message with links and expected actions
  • Status updates answer four questions: what's done, what's in progress, what's blocked, what needs attention

Project Closeout
  • Verify final deliverables against original scope
  • Confirm all files organized in correct folders with proper naming
  • Reconcile hours against approved estimate
  • Capture lessons learned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Must-Have Experience:
  • 3+ years experience in agency operations, project management, or traffic coordination
  • Demonstrated multi-project coordination at scale (10+ concurrent projects)
  • PM tool proficiency (Monday.com, Asana, or comparable) with the ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Experience configuring PM tools beyond basic use -- automations, alerts, dashboards, integrations
  • Budget tracking experience -- monitoring hours against approved estimates and flagging variances before they become problems
  • QC/verification capability -- reviewing deliverables against requirements for completeness and accuracy
  • Experience coordinating across creative, marketing, or professional services teams
  • Comfortable working within a contractor team model (not just full-time employee teams)
  • Proactive communication -- you surface issues early, not after deadlines pass
  • Currently using AI tools (Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, or equivalent) in your workflow

Preferred (Not Required):
  • Monday.com experience specifically
  • Agency-side traffic management experience (vs. client-side or in-house only)
  • Dropbox, OneDrive and Microsoft Teams familiarity
  • SOP and process documentation skills
  • Estimate consolidation experience (assembling multi-contributor estimates into single packages)
  • B2B professional services industry exposure

WHAT WE OFFER
  • Fully remote work -- work from anywhere, communicate during Eastern business hours
  • Established agency -- in business since 2009, professional contractor relationships
  • Defined operating model -- documented playbook, approval chains, and communication standards; you're not building from scratch
  • Collaborative team -- 10-15 specialists across strategy, design, content, paid ads, and web development
  • Meaningful coordination work -- multiple concurrent clients with real budgets and real deadlines
  • AI-forward environment -- team actively uses Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and other AI tools in daily workflows
  • No micromanagement -- clear expectations, then you operate; we trust your judgment

TOOLS YOU'LL WORK WITH
  • Monday.com -- project tracking, assignments, deadlines, status
  • Dropbox / OneDrive -- file storage with standard folder structure
  • Microsoft Teams -- internal team communication
  • AI tools -- Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT, and others as part of daily workflow

CONTRACTOR DETAILS
  • Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
  • Hours: Variable based on workload
  • Schedule: Flexible execution hours; available for communication during Eastern business hours
  • Location: Fully remote; Tampa Bay area preferred
