About the role
The Manager, Engineering will drive the design and development of fiber cable products while managing Development Engineering and Quality Assurance teams in our Fuquay-Varina facility. This role is a key leadership position requiring a combination of excellent leadership skills, strong engineering mindset and business acumen, and a passion for quality.
Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage Development Engineering and Quality Assurance teams to fully meet departmental and BU objectives.
  • Provide strong leadership to foster a culture that promotes hard work, achievement of individual goals, high performance, and professional development.

Engineering
  • Oversee development engineering projects and drive output with both vendors and internal teams.
  • Develop and maintain methods to ensure projects are completed timely, profitably, and to specifications.
  • Provide engineering leadership and oversight; understand business drivers and strategies to ensure alignment with business direction.
  • Provide engineering expertise and leadership on cross-functional teams through all phases of product lifecycle.
  • Participate on technical review boards to ensure engineering design meets product / market, quality, cost, and manufacturing needs and goals.

Quality Assurance:
  • Develop, implement, communicate and maintain a Quality plan to maintain the plant Quality Systems and processes in compliance with the NS and Corporate quality standards and system requirements.
  • Develop and grow the Quality capabilities of the plant through the development and deployment of shared (across BU's) standards, processes and best practices
  • Develop, implement and maintain ISO Quality Management System and other facility specific quality standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts including statistical capability, audits and corrective actions, and Quality performance metrics
  • Drive the Quality Concerns process ensuring timely feedback to create closed loop actions addressing Quality gaps, and work in conjunction with operations to ensure root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurrences
  • Monitor latest Quality techniques, trends, and concepts through active involvement in professional societies/events such as the annual Quality Summit to stay abreast of technical developments in Quality Assurance and associated fields
  • Work with final inspection team, addressing non-conforming material dispositions across all shifts.

Qualifications
Technical
  • Must have a strong background in statistical techniques and application
  • Ability to understand and apply FEA, FMEA and customer input to product design and development
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite at an intermediate to advanced level
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Product development and NPI processes
    • Quality management systems (ISO 9001 or equivalent)
    • APQP, PAC, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement tools

Behavioral/Leadership
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment with minimal instructions and guidance
  • Proven track record of effectively managing others including experience managing a team of disciplined engineers.
  • Excellent cross-team collaboration skills, including strong communications, prioritization, and interpersonal skills, along with proficient English language fluency.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, including the ability to interact effectively with all levels in a global organization.
  • Ability to clearly articulate plans, influence others, and make sound decisions.
  • Solution oriented, Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible.

Education & Experience
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering required with a focus on mechanical engineering.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Experience
  • Minimum 7 years of mechanical design engineering, product development, manufacturing engineering, or quality engineering experience
  • Previous management experience required
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment required
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and validation testing methods
  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer and/or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) a plus
  • Six Sigma Experience (Green or Black Belt) preferred
  • Strong experience with vendor and supply chain partnerships

Travel
  • There will be occasional travel with this role (up to 5-10%).
