Job description

In this role, you will be responsible for actively applying adult learning theories and principles to develop learning materials for in-person, virtual, and blended learning environments. You will partner with the firm to create effective learning experiences that align with our Core Values and Core Purpose. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a mix of communication, writing, and visual design skills.

Kimley-Horn is looking for an Instructional Designer to join our Cary, North Carolina (NC) office! This is not a remote position. 


  • Develop training deliverables such as presentations, learning activities, assessments, eLearning courses, instructional videos, and one-page job aids using provided content authoring tools.
  • Create instructor lesson plans, rubrics, and other instructor resources.
  • Edit and proofread materials for grammar, format, style, accuracy, and consistency per established quality control checklists and brand guidelines.
  • Create graphics and other visuals that support instructional clarity and learner engagement for training materials.
  • Manage assigned training tasks and deliverables with increasing independence, including documenting project needs, tracking progress, and communicating updates to stakeholders.
  • Develop working knowledge of Kimley-Horn disciplines, training systems, databases, and internal processes to support effective learning solutions for internal clients.
  • Use feedback, data, and prior project outcomes to evaluate and improve training effectiveness and deliverables to enhance the learner experience.
  • Collaborate with partners, subject matter experts, stakeholders, and team members to complete, maintain, and optimize training projects.

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree with at least 18+ months of relevant post-graduate experience
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Basic to intermediate skills and technical knowledge of the following:
    • Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
    • Content authoring tools (Articulate 360, Camtasia, Vyond)
    • Leverages AI tools to optimize project workflows, accelerate content development timelines, and ensure high-quality instructional outputs
  • Successfully manages multiple projects from concept to completion with some guidance to ensure on-time delivery.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment
  • Domestic travel up to 5%
