Detroit Lake State Recreation Area - Oregon State Parks

Your New Role
As a permanent, full-time Park Ranger 2, you will perform and oversee a wide range of duties to protect, maintain, operate, and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, facilities, structures, equipment, and systems. This role requires skills in the building trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, and landscape maintenance as well as specialized program expertise, including resource interpretation, natural and cultural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, and park rule enforcement. These responsibilities support the maintenance and operations of OPRD programs and properties within the Detroit Lake Management Unit.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Four years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). OR
  • A Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies 1 year of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping). OR
  • An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 2.5 years of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

Special Requirements:
  • To be hired, a criminal record and driving record check must be completed that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment while also maintaining a valid driver's license.

Desired Attributes:
  • Skill and knowledge of specialized park resource and facility operations and maintenance and/or resource interpretation.
  • Skill in maintaining composure and taking appropriate action during emergency or emotionally charged situations.
  • Skill in evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Skill in planning and organizing equipment, materials and staff to accomplish work.
  • Skill in park rule enforcement.
  • Skill in performing plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds-keeping tasks at a journeyman level.
  • Skill in diagnosing maintenance and operation problems, breakdowns and disruptions, and in initiating and carrying out solutions.
