Job description

General Description JOIN OUR TEAM AS A LIBRARY ASSISTANT Paraprofessional library work assisting in one or more of the service areas in the County library system. Employees assigned to a position in this classification may work in areas such as system-wide services, interlibrary loan, public services, youth/children's services, circulation, supplies and materials or other areas of the County library system. Essential Job Functions Answers telephone calls and directs them accordingly.

Receives requests for information. Assists citizens with in-person inquiries. Resolves questions and problems.

Maintains the operation of the branch automated circulation desk according to established procedures. Performs all circulation duties related to automated circulation desk operation. Provides reference, programming, outreach, and public services work under the direction of a professional librarian.

Conducts bibliographic research and processes library material. Locates correct bibliographic records for items to be converted. Proofreads for accuracy and assigns identifying machine-readable label to item.

Shelves books and reads shelves. Maintains records of fines and fees. Deposits money as required.

Sorts, processes, and distributes incoming and outgoing mail. Maintains orderly flow of returned materials. Prepares and files circulation, financial, and other reports.

Occasionally, requires lifting, moving, pushing, and pulling heavy objects weighing up to 35lbs. Performs related work as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the services and operations of the library system.

Knowledge of standard library clerical methods and practices. Some knowledge of library circulation policies and procedures. Ability to learn and apply complex automated procedures and to utilize computer equipment, software, and new technologies in performance of day-to-day work.

Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and manuals, and to apply such instruction to work situations. Ability to learn and apply complex policies and procedures, and make decisions within the framework of the stated policies and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, and the public in both oral and written format.

Ability to interpret circulation policies and procedures to the public. Ability to utilize business mathematics and business English. Ability to work without close supervision.

Ability to use judgment in performing library duties. Ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and push or pull heavy objects. Minimum Requirements PHYSICAL SKILLS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and push or pull heavy objects.

May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to life and/or move excessively heavy objects. Requires frequent standing, walking, reaching and stooping. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication

Must be able to work evenings and weekends. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. One (1) year of experience in customer service duties involving frequent contact with the public or vendors as well as performing clerical duties.

Experience in the operation of a personal computer and related software required. Experience in libraries preferred. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
