Job description

Summary

Under the direction of the Law Library Director, this staff member will be primarily responsible to oversee the overall functioning of the Law Library with direct supervision over the heads of all Law Library functions and staff. They will assist the Law Library Director on all administrative library workflow matters and responsible for the administration of the Law Library in the Director’s absence.

Essential Functions

Associate Librarian Duties

  • In collaboration with the Law Library Director, provide strategic guidance on how the law library can be most effective in teaching, research, and providing services to the College of Law, the University, and other constituents.
  • Assist in developing the law library’s mission, vision, and values, to support the College of Law’s mission and strategic plan as well as the University’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Assist with the development of all law library policies.
  • Assist the Director in library administration and coordination of interdepartmental activities withinthe library.
  • Supervise the law library in the director’s absence.
  • Implement and oversee the law library’s human resources policies, including recruitment, hiring, evaluation and training. Oversee and coordinate Law Library staff vacation requests and absence reports. Direct the hiring of student assistants
    • Interview and participate in the selection of assigned staff; conduct performance appraisals and suggest professional development opportunities in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Director by in coordinating all facilities management services and issues dealing with the Office of Physical Plantand all telecommunications needs with the Law School Administration.
  • Coordinate Law Library membership in the different cooperating consortia, professional organizations, or any other groups to which the Law Library belongs to.
  • Maintain and provide information an d s t at is t ic s an d assist with preparing reports for ABA, SEFLIN, SACS, Department of Education, and other accrediting agencies.
  • Monitor the expenses of the faculty book account in consultation with the Faculty Services and Scholarly Communications Librarian and communicate with the faculty when necessary.
  • Recommend the organizational structure, staffing and functional responsibilities of the law library.
  • Assist the director in communications with library vendors and Collection Management Services to ensure proper resources are made available.
  • Assist the Director with strategic planning and long-term initiatives with the Law Library and University Library system.
  • Assist the Director in oversight of the STU Audiovisual department with regard to law school classroom technologies and support.
Public Services Duties
  • Provide research and reference support to all library patrons.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of research guides, bibliographic tools, the law library webpage
  • Coordinate and teach guest lectures, lunch and learns, and other curricular and extra-curricular programming that involves general and specialized legal research.
  • Prepare instructional material and training sessions and participate in legal research instructional programs as requested or needed by law school faculty or student organizations.
  • Assist with collection development with emphasis on non-print material.
  • Keep statistics on special project and assignments.
  • In the absence of the Faculty Services Librarian, provide direct support to the Law School faculty for research, materials, and training requests including Canvas, Westlaw/TWEN, LexisNexis/Lexis Classroom, Bloomberg Law and other law school technologies and resources.
  • Participates in general Reference & Research services as part of regular workflow, including regular shifts at the reference desk.
Other duties
  • Represent the Law Library in local, regional, and national meetings as requested.
  • Serve on University and/or Law School Committees and participate in University and Law School events as requested.
  • Keep informed of new trends in access services and the law profession.
  • Recommend materials and services to Library Administration based upon current trends in use amongst faculty and students.
  • Teach courses in legal research and legal writing as needed in coordination with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Director of Legal Writing.
Competencies
  • Strong and effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong supervisory skills with the ability to manage and develop staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with students and faculty from a wide diversity of background and educational experiences.
  • Organizational, planning, and administrative skills including the ability to work effectively on broad as well as detailed projects.
  • Ability to work in a network environment including working with an integrated library system.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with legal databases and common law school and educational technologies, and the ability to design library instructional tools.
  • Strong technical skills, interest in technology, and the ability to troubleshoot simple technology problems, failures, or deficiencies- expertise with law school technologies such as TWEN, Lexis Classroom, Canvas, is essential.
  • Ability to understand library system technology that can be used to improve services, instruction efforts and workflows.
  • Strong service orientation and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Be flexible with work assignments and work hours.
 
Supervisory Responsibility

This position has direct supervision of law librarians and heads of Law Library sub-units. This position indirectly supervises any staff, including work-study students, engaged by these departments.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; push library carts full of books; climb on stands to shelf books. The employee must occasionally lift or move library materials and supplies, up to 30 pounds.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This position occasionally requires schedule changes with weekend/evening hours.

Travel

Travel is primarily for Professional Development. The employee will be asked to represent the Law Library in local, regional, and national meetings as requested by the Library Director.

Education and Experience
  • M.L.S. from an A.L.A. accredited library school program is required.
  • J.D. from an accredited ABA institution is required. Previous academic law library experience is required.
  • Three or more years of experience in law libraries is preferred. One or more years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Previous library administration experience strongly preferred.
