Library Assistant

Title: Library Assistant
Work Year: 10-Month, Part-Time
Department: Branford Public Schools
FLSA Status: Represented, Non-Exempt
Reports To: Principal and School Library/Media Specialist
Salary Range: Level 1
Hourly Rate: $21.36 - $23.06





Position Overview:

The Library Secretary provides administrative and clerical support to the School Media Specialist in the daily operation of the school library. This position assists with maintaining library materials and records, supporting students and staff in the use of library resources and technology, and performing general office and clerical duties.

The Library Secretary helps maintain an organized, welcoming library environment that supports instructional activities and student learning.

Key Responsibilities:

Library Operations and Student Support

  • Assist students and staff in locating and using library materials, catalogs, and information resources.
  • Support the use of computers, databases, internet resources, and audio-visual equipment in the library.
  • Assist with instructional activities and student use of the library, including reading to younger students when assigned.
  • Refer students to the Media Specialist for specialized assistance as needed.

Library Materials and Records Management

  • Assist with cataloging, processing, and maintaining library books, periodicals, and other materials.
  • Check materials in and out, return items to shelves, and assist with monitoring overdue materials.
  • Maintain library records and enter catalog information into the library database system.
  • Assist with preparing and distributing information about library materials and resources.

Administrative and Clerical Support

  • Provide clerical support including answering telephone calls, greeting visitors, processing mail, and preparing routine correspondence.
  • Assist with ordering library materials and supplies and verifying purchase orders and deliveries.
  • Maintain inventories of library and office supplies and request replenishment as needed.
  • Maintain files, records, and other documentation related to library operations.

Coordination and Support

  • Assist the Media Specialist in organizing library activities, displays, and instructional materials.
  • Coordinate the use and return of instructional media, equipment, and teaching materials.
  • Assist with scheduling and supervising volunteers or student helpers when assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Library/Media Specialist or designee.

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Previous experience in a school, library, or office environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to acquire knowledge of Board of Education policies, procedures, and educational philosophy.
  • Ability to interact positively with students, staff, parents, and the public.
  • Working knowledge of library procedures and office practices.
  • Ability to learn and use computer applications and equipment related to library operations.
  • Ability to learn  Microsoft Office and Google applications and district-specific software applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical and Cognitive Demands:

Work in this classification is performed primarily in an open library environment with frequent interaction with students and staff. The position requires concentration on moderate detail while managing regular interruptions.

The employee is routinely exposed to computer screens and may be required to lift and move light to medium weights such as books, equipment, and office supplies. Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 and hearing correctable to within normal limits are required.
