JOB TITLE: LibraryAssociate - Part-Time
DEPARTMENT: Duxbury Free Library - Technical Services Department
REPORTS TO: Library Director and Library Managers
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt- non-benefiteligible
RATE RANGE: $24.77 to $29.58 per hour in seven steps
GRADE: Grade 2
WORK SCHEDULE: Variable hours, may include some evenings andweekends, 10 hours or less per week

1. Nature of Work: The purpose of this position is to provide paraprofessional support toprofessional library staff through the performance of varied duties andtasks. Performs professional levelduties requiring a thorough knowledge of library procedures, libraryorganization, and department operations. Must exercise judgment and initiative to perform duties; must be able towork independently and as part of a team.
2. Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of thelibrary division head and under the general supervision of the librarydirector. The employee carries out theregular work in accordance with standard practices and previous training. Work is generally reviewed only for technicalaccuracy, appropriateness of actions or decisions, and conformance with policyor other requirements.
3. Supervision Given: May direct library pages and libraryvolunteers and may act as supervisor of a shift, if so directed, of if noprofessional staff is available. Maytrain other staff members.
4. Confidentiality: Employee has access to confidential information of the department. Confidentiality must be maintained withregard to this information in accordance with Departmental Policy and thePublic Records Act.
5. Accountability: Consequences or errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may includeadverse public relations, monetary loss and delay or loss of library services.
6. Judgment: The work requires examining, analyzing and evaluating facts andcircumstances and determining actions to be taken within the limits of standardor accepted practices. Guidelinesinclude a large body of policies, practices, and precedents. Employee is expected to weigh efficiency andrelative priorities in performing work assignments.
7. Complexity: The work consists of the practical application of assignments ingathering, analyzing and evaluating facts or data; or determining the methodsto accomplish the work.
8. Nature and Purpose of Public Contact: Employee interacts with co-workers, and thepublic to explain department procedures or guidelines. Excellent customer service skills arerequired involving courtesy, tact, and diplomacy in resolving complaints orconcerns with patrons of the library.
9. Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree preferred, relatededucation and experience considered.
10. Knowledge,Abilities and Skill
Knowledge: General knowledge of public library services.
Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to deal with the general public andstaff members in a pleasant and tactful manner. Ability to learn and undertake new procedures.
Skill: Excellent computer keyboarding and mouse skills. Excellent inter-personal and good computerskills.

Circulation Department
• Working at the circulation desk and circulatingmaterials using the automated system.

• Answering telephone calls, managing relevantones, and referring others to appropriate staff.
• Registering patrons, collecting fines and fees.
• Providing directional and general readersadvisory information to patrons.
• Assisting in physical collection care such asre-shelving, arranging, and weeding as directed.
• Assisting the department head in departmentplanning.
• Performs related duties or special projects asrequired or directed.
Children's Department
• Working at the children's services desk.
• Communicating library policies and procedures topatrons.
• Answering telephone calls, managing relevantones, and referring others to appropriate staff.
• Registering patrons.
• Providing reference and reader advisoryinformation to patrons.
• Assisting in collection care or collectiondevelopment as directed.
• Developing children's programs, displays and webpage maintenance.
• Assisting department head in department planning.
TechnicalServices Department
• Participating in the acquisition andclassification of materials.
• Processing library materials.
• Providing online data entry and data editing oflibrary materials.
• Assisting in physical collection care such asmending and weeding, as directed.
• Assisting department head in departmentplanning.
Reference Department
• Assisting professional reference and young adultstaff.
• Communicating library policies and procedures topatrons.
• Answering telephone calls, managing relevantones, and referring others to appropriate staff.
• Providing directional reference and reader'sadvisory information to patrons.
• Assisting in collection care or collectiondevelopment as directed, including periodicals, history room materials, andvertical file
