What is Legal Tech?

Legal Tech, short for legal technology, refers to the use of software and technology to provide legal services and support the legal industry. This can include tools for document automation, e-discovery, legal research, case management, and contract analysis. Legal Tech aims to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and make legal services more accessible. It is increasingly important in modern law firms, legal departments, and even for individuals seeking legal help.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Legal Tech?

To excel in Legal Tech, you need a solid understanding of both legal principles and technology, often supported by a degree in law, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with legal research databases, document automation tools, e-discovery platforms, and relevant certifications such as Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills that set professionals apart in this field. These competencies enable the seamless integration of technology into legal processes, driving efficiency, accuracy, and innovation.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Legal Tech roles, and how can they overcome them?

Professionals in legal tech often encounter challenges such as bridging the gap between technical solutions and legal requirements, managing resistance to change among traditional legal teams, and staying updated on rapidly evolving technologies. To overcome these challenges, it's important to maintain strong communication and collaboration with both legal and IT departments, actively seek ongoing training and certifications, and participate in cross-functional projects. Building a network within the legal tech community can also provide valuable support and insights for addressing industry-specific obstacles.

What is the difference between Legal Tech vs Paralegal?

AspectLegal TechParalegal
Required credentialsTypically no formal certification, but familiarity with legal softwareCertificate or associate degree in paralegal studies often required
Work environmentTech companies, law firms, legal departmentsLaw firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies
Industry usageDeveloping legal software, automating legal processesSupporting attorneys with research, document preparation

Legal Tech professionals focus on developing and implementing technology solutions for legal services, often requiring technical skills and familiarity with legal processes. Paralegals assist attorneys directly with legal research, document management, and case preparation. While both roles operate within the legal industry, Legal Tech emphasizes technology development, whereas paralegals provide legal support services.

How to become a legal tech?

Legal tech is a field that combines legal knowledge with technology skills, often requiring a background in law, computer science, or related areas. Gaining proficiency in legal research, document management software, and programming languages like Python can be beneficial, along with certifications in legal technology tools or project management. Building experience through internships or specialized training programs can also help prepare for roles in legal tech companies or legal departments.

Job description

Global Protg Product Marketing Leader

LexisNexis is creating a new Global Protg Product Marketing capability to strengthen how we sense the market, define product truth, differentiate, and equip teams globally with consistent, credible messaging. This role will build and lead the operating model that turns market, customer, competitor, product, and technology developments into coordinated global action. This will require a deep understanding of our "One Box" vision, our Technology, our Content, and our Market. The successful individual will exhibit an ability to collaborate, influence, and lead the wider business in executing our Global Protg Product Marketing motion. This role will act as a demanding customer to our Product & Technology functions leveraging Customer and Sales feedback and championing innovation. It will also be a strong and enabling supplier to our local Product & Segment Marketing, Communications and PR teams.

Legal AI is reshaping customer expectations and competitive positioning. Lexis Protg and our One Box vision moves us beyond standalone AI tools by embedding AI directly into legal workflows, helping customers work faster, make better decisions, and complete key tasks more efficiently. The successful candidate will help ensure the market understands this shift clearly, consistently, and with proof.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build the new Global Protg Product Marketing capability, including operating cadence, governance, stakeholder alignment, core outputs, and team ways of working.
  • Own the Protg global value proposition, positioning, differentiation, technical narrative, and messaging guardrails.
  • Own and optimize global Protg Web Pages
  • Convert market signals into a disciplined Trigger / Decision / Mobilize process, defining what happened, why it matters, whether LexisNexis should lead, fast-follow, or educate, and what response is required.
  • Create commercial briefing kits, sales enablement assets, messaging playbooks, objection-handling guides, battlecards, and executive narratives for global and local teams.
  • Partner with Product and Technology leaders to position new capabilities, model updates, product releases, and technical differentiators quickly and credibly.
  • Enable local marketing teams to adapt the global proposition by country, customer segment, regulatory context, and commercial priority without fragmenting the core narrative.
  • Advise senior stakeholders on market dynamics, competitive threats, customer needs, and whitespace opportunities, while ensuring narrative consistency across Sales, Product, Brand, Communications, Analyst Relations, and local markets.

Key Interfaces

  • Global Protg Product Marketing owns Protg product truth, positioning, differentiation, technical narrative, commercial briefing kits, and local product marketing guidance and it will:
  • Support Global Brand, PR, and Communications who own the Corporate AI narrative, brand architecture, visual identity, executive communications, media, social, influencer activity, and issues management.
  • Support local marketing teams who own local activation, country and segment plans, channel mix, events, local proof points, and market feedback.
  • Sales Leadership provides buyer insight, competitive field intelligence, segment priorities, and adoption feedback, and uses the global enablement assets to improve customer conversations.

Success Measures

  • Sales and local marketing teams actively use global messaging, briefing kits, battlecards, and proof points.
  • LexisNexis responds faster and more coherently to competitive and technology market signals.
  • Internal duplication, unclear ownership, and conflicting product narratives are reduced.
  • Competitive differentiation, market perception, pipeline influence, product adoption, and AI workflow engagement improve over time.

Required Experience

  • Extensive experience in product marketing, competitive intelligence, product strategy, or go-to-market strategy within B2B technology, SaaS, AI, legal technology, regulatory technology, or another complex professional market.
  • Proven ability to define global positioning for AI-enabled, workflow-centric, or enterprise technology solutions.
  • Strong ability to translate technical capabilities into credible customer value propositions, commercial narratives, and sales enablement.
  • Demonstrated success influencing across a global matrix, including Product, Technology, Sales, Brand, Communications, Strategy, Customer Insight, and local marketing teams.
  • Strong commercial judgement, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a data-driven approach to prioritization and measurement.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in legal technology, legal information, corporate legal, law firm, compliance, or regulatory markets.
  • Experience marketing AI products, generative AI capabilities, agentic workflows, foundation model-based applications, or embedded workflow automation.
  • Experience operating in highly competitive markets with AI-native disruptors, major platform providers, or fast-moving product narratives.
  • Experience with analyst relations, market evaluation programs, executive briefing materials, or thought leadership support.

Candidate Profile

The candidate should exhibit a deep understanding of and a passion to drive the power and potential of AI within our chosen markets. The ideal candidate is a strategic product marketer with the judgement to know when to lead, when to fast-follow, and when to educate the market. They must be commercially astute and operationally adept while exhibiting technical curiosity and a global mindset. They also need to be comfortable building a new function while operating hands-on to define how this function integrates into and supports the redefinition of working practices and structures as necessary to achieve our goals.
