Job description

Learning Lab Tutor

Status: Part-Time, Contracted (1099 Independent Contractor)
Department: Youth Development / Academic Support
Reports To: Learning Lab Coordinator
Location: YMCA Learning Lab Program

Position Summary

The YMCA is seeking enthusiastic and student-centered Learning Lab Tutors to support elementary-aged students in strengthening their reading and math skills through targeted small-group instruction. Tutors will help create a positive and engaging learning environment while supporting academic growth aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

This is a contracted 1099 independent contractor position and is not eligible for YMCA employee benefits.

Schedule
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

  • 7:10 AM โ€“ 8:20 AM

Compensation
  • $50 per hour

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Work with assigned small groups of students (3โ€“5 students per group)

  • Provide targeted instruction in reading and math aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks

  • Support students in building academic confidence and strengthening grade-level skills

  • Maintain a positive, engaging, and structured learning environment

  • Communicate student progress, concerns, and attendance issues with the Program Coordinator as needed

  • Arrive prepared and ready to support student learning during designated sessions

  • Collaborate with the Tutor Coordinator regarding weekly schedules and student assignments

  • Adapt instruction based on changing student group assignments and learning needs while maintaining consistency within assigned grade levels

  • Utilize materials provided by the Lead Coordinator, including printed materials, whiteboards, markers, paper, and pencils

  • Provide any additional instructional materials deemed necessary for tutoring sessions

  • Ensure no electronic devices are used during tutoring sessions unless specifically approved by the Coordinator

  • Model YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all interactions with students, families, and staff

Qualifications
  • Massachusetts Elementary Education Certification preferred

  • Experience working with elementary-aged students in academic or enrichment settings

  • Strong communication and classroom management skills

  • Ability to provide engaging and differentiated instruction in reading and math

  • Reliable, organized, collaborative, and student-centered approach

  • Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff
