What is a learning director?

Learning Directors are professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing educational programs within organizations or institutions. They collaborate with stakeholders to identify learning needs, develop curriculum, and ensure instructional effectiveness. Learning Directors also assess program outcomes, manage budgets, and often supervise teams of educators or trainers. Their goal is to enhance employee skills, promote professional development, and align learning initiatives with organizational objectives.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a learning director?

To thrive as a Learning Director, you need expertise in instructional design, curriculum development, and adult learning principles, typically supported by an advanced degree in education or a related field. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), e-learning authoring tools, and relevant certifications like CPLP or ATD are commonly required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills help drive organizational learning initiatives and foster team collaboration. These competencies ensure effective development and delivery of learning programs that align with organizational goals and promote employee growth.

How does a learning director collaborate with other departments to align training initiatives with organizational goals?

A Learning Director often works closely with department heads, HR, and executive leadership to assess skill gaps and ensure training programs support broader business objectives. This collaboration involves regular meetings, needs assessments, and integrating feedback from various teams to tailor learning solutions. By fostering cross-departmental communication, the Learning Director helps ensure that educational initiatives are relevant, impactful, and drive measurable results for the organization.

Job description

Posting Type Hybrid Job Overview

This is a net new role and the capability that unlocks the team’s future-state vision. The Learning Experience Designer architects the microlearning ecosystem for Relativity’s sales enablement function — building fast, modular, AI-powered content that travels at the speed of the business. They also own onboarding as a designed, measured program — not a maintenance task. This person serves as the shared content engine for the full team, partnering closely with the Sales Trainer to co-design and co-deliver programs, and with the Director to shape the team’s overall learning model.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and build microlearning programs across all four workstreams: commercial & tech stack, sales playbooks, role of the seller, and onboarding
  • Own the onboarding program as a designed, role-specific, personalized journey that measurably reduces ramp time
  • Build AI-assisted content pipelines that allow the team to turn ideas into deployed training in days, not weeks
  • Partner with the Sales Trainer to co-design programs — the Trainer brings field insight and delivery expertise, the LXD brings learning architecture and production capability
  • Manage the learning tech stack and ensure content is optimized for Highspot, LMS, Slack, and in-flow delivery
  • Measure content effectiveness through completion rates, assessment scores, and downstream productivity signals
  • Stay current on AI-forward learning tools and bring new capabilities to the team proactively
Qualifications
  • 5+ years in instructional design, learning experience design, or content strategy with a sales enablement focus
  • Deep expertise in microlearning design principles, spaced repetition, and modern LXD frameworks
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted content creation tools and rapid authoring platforms (Articulate, Arist, or equivalent)
  • Track record of owning onboarding program design — not just maintaining it
  • Strong visual and UX sensibility: ability to build content that is engaging, not just informative
  • Experience integrating learning content into seller workflow tools (Highspot, Slack, Salesforce)
Differentiators (Preferred)
  • Experience in a high-growth SaaS or legal tech environment
  • Familiarity with the e-discovery market or Relativity’s product ecosystem
  • Experience building a content production system from scratch, not inheriting a mature one
What Success Looks Like in Year One
  • Onboarding redesigned as a role-specific, measured journey with a documented ramp baseline and improvement target
  • A working AI-assisted content pipeline in place — idea to deployed asset measured in days
  • Microlearning library established and adopted across all four workstreams
  • Content effectiveness reporting running on a regular cadence and informing what gets built next

Relativity is committed to competitive, fair, and equitable compensation practices. This position is eligible for total compensation which includes a competitive base salary, an annual performance bonus, and long-term incentives. The expected salary range for this role is between following values: $116,000 and $174,000. The final offered salary will be based on several factors, including but not limited to the candidate's depth of experience, skill set, qualifications, and internal pay equity. Hiring at the top end of the range would not be typical, to allow for future meaningful salary growth in this position.
