Job description
Girls on the Run Rhode Island is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Our programs combine social-emotional learning, physical activity, community impact projects, and culminate in joyful 5K celebrations. Since 2012, Girls on the Run RI served 8,114 third- through eighth-grade participants throughout Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts.
The Program Manager is an integral member of our growing program team, working in close collaboration with our existing Program Manager to expand and sustain programming across our territory. The Program Manager coordinates sites, manages volunteer coaches, and builds and maintains strong relationships with site partners, coaches, participants, and their families to ensure high-quality implementation of our programs.
- Implement the Girls on the Run strategic program plan and achieve goals with respect to the number of participants served, site and demographic requirements, and recruitment and management of volunteer coaches.
- Collaborate with community leaders, schools, and partner organizations to maximize the success of Girls on the Run programming within current and prospective sites.
- Manage and support the needs of new and existing sites, with particular attention to sites in Bristol County as the program grows.
- Conduct in-season site visits to ensure quality program implementation and provide real-time support to coaches and site coordinators.
- Monitor and enforce current site policies and procedures, implementing improvements as needed.
- Manage coach training requirements, including Girls on the Run National Coach Training, background checks, and CPR & First Aid certifications.
- Work with sites to develop effective coach recruitment and retention strategies that reflect the communities we serve.
- Oversee and support the needs of coach volunteers throughout the program.
- Conduct evaluations of the volunteer coach experience and the implementation of support models for continued success.
- Design and implement coach appreciation initiatives throughout the season.
- Monitor and enforce current coaching and youth protection policies and procedures, implementing improvements as needed.
- Coordinate all aspects of program to ensure compliance and program quality.
- Process site and coach recruitment applications and keep accurate records in Pinwheel.
- Manage inventory and distribution of program curriculum, materials, and supplies.
- Maintain participant financial aid policies and procedures.
- Ensure prompt and accurate data collection (including roster, participant and coach demographics, program revenue) to assess program impact and outcomes. Compile findings in seasonal program evaluations and recommend improvements.
- Develop communications to sites, coaches and families and collaborate with team members.
- Gather and share program testimonials from sites, volunteer coaches, and caregivers to support development and communications efforts.
- Play a key leadership role at end-of-season 5K Celebration events, supporting coaches, 5K buddies, and participating sites.
- Attend community events and meetings on behalf of the organization to raise awareness of Girls on the Run and build relationships across the council territory.
- Participate in team events including site visits, prospective site or coach meetings, coach training, fundraisers, and 5K Celebrations.
- Two to five years of experience in program or volunteer management, youth development, K-12 education, or a related field.
- Passion for the Girls on the Run mission and the communities we serve.
- Exceptional communication and storytelling skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences and confidently represent the organization in a variety of settings.
- Strong relationship-building and customer service skills to support volunteers, program partners, participants, and their families.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, and execute strategies that achieve goals and deadlines with a strong attention to detail.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace and comfortable using Canva, CRM systems, and other digital tools.
- Based within and able to travel regularly throughout our council territory (Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts).
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends to support events and training.
- Ability to lift and move boxes up to 50 pounds as needed for event activities.
- A deep connection to the Girls on the Run mission and core values.
- Creative and strategic thinking that inspires meaningful action.
- Authentic, community-centered relationships that strengthen impact.
- A self-driven approach with strong organizational and time management skills in a dynamic environment.
- Collaboration and teamwork, supporting others in ways that are both fun and meaningful.
- A respect for work-life balance that sustains personal well-being and professional excellence.
At Girls on the Run, we know that confidence grows when people are supported in trying new things. Research shows that women and people from underrepresented groups often hesitate to apply unless they meet every qualification. We want to change that. If this role inspires you and you believe you have the skills and passion to contribute, we encourage you to apply, even if you don't meet every listed qualification. We look forward to learning what unique strengths you can bring to our team.
