POSITION: Â Â Â Â Â Special Education Coordinator
LOCATION:Â Â Â Â Woodbridge Middle School
REPORTS TO:Â Â Building Principal
START DATE: Â Â August 17, 2026 (will include prior summer days)
CLOSING DATE: Open Until Filled
JOB SUMMARY:
The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and managing the special education program within the school. This role involves ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate services and accommodations in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Special Education Coordinator collaborates with teachers, staff, parents, and external agencies to foster an inclusive educational environment and promote the academic, social, and emotional development of students with special needs.
QUALIFICATIONÂ REQUIREMENTS:
- Must hold or be eligible for an educator license in the State of DelawareÂ
- Must hold or be eligible for special education certification
- At least four (4) years of successful special education teaching or educator experience preferred.
- Experience with IEP development and implementation is essential.
- At least two (2) years of demonstrated and effective leadership experience in an educational environment (preferably in a secondary setting).
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including those with moderate to severe disabilities preferred.
- Knowledge of special education laws and regulations and the ability to ensure compliance is essential.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple IEPs, student progress reports, and documentation requirements.
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to handle complex issues and make decisions quickly and effectively.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Â Â
- Coordinate the implementation of the special education program in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Ensure that IEPs are developed, implemented, and regularly reviewed for all students with disabilities.
- Monitor and assess the effectiveness of special education services and make adjustments as needed.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, support staff, and administrators to ensure that students with disabilities are included in the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible.
- Provide support and guidance to special education teachers and other staff working with students with disabilities.
- Work with parents and guardians to keep them informed about their child's progress and address any concerns related to special education services.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and district policies related to special education services.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for students with disabilities, including IEPs, progress reports, and assessments.
- Coordinate and assist with student evaluations and reevaluations as required.
- Provide training and professional development opportunities for teachers and staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in working with students with disabilities.
- Stay informed on the latest research, best practices, and legal requirements related to special education.
- Support teachers in managing challenging behaviors and provide crisis intervention as necessary.
- Coordinate the allocation of resources and support services (e.g., speech therapy, occupational therapy) for students with disabilities.
- Ensure that students have access to appropriate assistive technology and accommodations.
- Conduct regular assessments of student progress and make recommendations for adjustments to instructional methods, accommodations, or supports.
- Prepare reports for district administrators, state agencies, and other stakeholders on the performance of the special education program.
- Assist in planning for the transition of students with disabilities from one grade level to the next, as well as preparing for post-secondary transitions.Â
- Collaborate with outside agencies (Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Division of Developmental Disabilities Services, Service Source, etc.) to ensure students receive essential transition services focusing on employment, post-secondary education or training, community participation and independent living.
- Collaborate with the school psychologist to determine if a student's behavior was a manifestation of their disability, requiring a review of the student's IEP, behavioral records, and relevant information.
- Act as the liaison with the State of Delaware, ensuring students with disabilities can take assessments with necessary accommodations, including submitting accommodation requests.
- Request Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM) are learning materials to be converted into one or more specialized formats for use by students with print disabilities.
- Review special education records to ensure proper identification, evaluation, placement, funding, and compliance for students with disabilities.
- Collaborate with other Education Agencies to ensure special education records are complete and follow students when they transfer between schools.
- Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND EXPECTATIONS:
This is a 10-month position based on a 188-day annual contract. Employees are expected to work 7.5 hours per day, consistent with the established school and district schedules. Responsibilities may include duties beyond instructional time, such as meetings, professional development, and school-related events. Employees are expected to maintain regular attendance, fulfill all assigned responsibilities, and demonstrate flexibility to meet the evolving needs of students, staff, and the district. This position may require additional workdays during the summer months beyond the standard school-year schedule.
