ABOUT THE POSITION

Project Manager - Land Development

Join VHB’s dynamic Land Development team in Williamsburg or Richmond, VA where your engineering expertise will help shape communities and deliver impactful projects across commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional sectors. As a client-focused Project Manager, you will manage complex land development projects, collaborate closely with clients and stakeholders, and ensure high-quality design and permitting deliverables. This is a hands-on role for an experienced engineer who thrives in a client-facing environment and is eager to lead projects from concept through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage civil engineering design and land development projects, including site layout, grading, utility design, and stormwater management.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders, fostering strong relationships and ensuring client needs and expectations are met.
  • Prepare, review, and approve design plans, specifications, construction documents, and permitting materials.
  • Coordinate project tasks with internal teams, consultants, and contractors during design and construction phases, including responding to contractor questions and reviewing submittals.
  • Develop proposals, budgets, and project schedules; support business development efforts and client presentations.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members, promoting professional growth and quality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and standards, with particular knowledge of Virginia market and development codes.

Skills and Attributes

  • Demonstrated success managing client relationships and leading projects in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of site development, grading, drainage, utility design, and construction standards.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with a client-focused and collaborative approach.
  • Ability to multitask, think critically, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Self-motivated with strong leadership potential and commitment to continuous professional development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in land development engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Virginia or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft Office; experience with Microsoft Project and GIS software is a plus.

The base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $155,000 for our I-64 Virginia offices. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
