Education and Work Experience:

  1. Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
  2. Work/Professional Experience: 18 years of age or older; Must hold a valid Food Handler Card or must obtain it within first week; some kitchen experience recommended

Scope of Position:

The Dishwasher & Kitchen Assistant is responsible for maintaining the kitchen dishwasher room, providing assistance to the Head Cook in prepping needed items for meals, assist with janitorial duties in both the kitchen and dining room areas, and any other kitchen duties as assigned by the Head Cook or Operations Manager. The Salvation Army reserves the right to revise or change job descriptions and/or duties as the need arises.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Must have the ability to present oneself in a professional and appropriate manner.
  2. Must have a current Food Handlers Card and Certification as required by the Health Department. Knowledge and comprehension of practices in safe food handling.
  3. The ability to maintain confidentiality regarding information and documentation.
  4. Must be willing to learn of kitchen procedures and food safety.
  5. Basic knowledge of janitorial procedures, such as cleaning floors and tables.
  6. Must be willing to learn simple skills to prepare aspects of meals being cooked.
  7. Must have the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
  8. The ability to interact with other staff members and the public in a positive manner.
  9. Must become familiar with The Salvation Army’s mission and local ministries.
  10. Be able to represent the ideals of The Salvation Army in every aspect of his/her work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Each employee of The Salvation Army, Medford Citadel Corps, is responsible for engaging with individuals without discrimination, upholding the mission of The Salvation Army to nurture and develop the spirit, soul, and body of each person we serve.

Kitchen Duties:

  1. Wash dishes, glasses, pots & pans and silverware by hand or with the dishwasher machine.
  2. Make sure the dishwasher area is kept clean. Straighten counters and sink areas after meals conclude.
  3. Wash kitchen machinery (meat slicer, food processors, mixers, steam table, coffee pot, etc.) as needed or assigned.
  4. Accompany the Head Cook on shopping trips for purchase of needed supplies.
  5. Help to unload, move, rearrange and store purchased or donated supplies.
  6. Date, store and rotate leftovers for proper storage and use.
  7. Sweep and mop kitchen floors daily.
  8. Properly scrub and wash kitchen rubber mats once a week.
  9. Assist with the preparation and serving of all meals and snacks when needed.
  10. Assist with preparation of snacks for dining room use, as assigned by the Head Cook.
  11. Responsible for heating up dinner to serve on shifts where the Head Cook is not working.
  12. Assist in conducting regular weekly cleaning on freezers, refrigerators and storage areas.
  13. Clean the ovens, stove top and griddle weekly.
  14. Assist in maintaining proper cleanliness and sanitization standards in all areas of the kitchen.
  15. Observe proper hygiene practices and obey all health and hygiene rules and regulations as mandated by controlling agencies in the preparation of food.

Dining Room Duties:

  1. Responsible for overall cleanliness of dining room. Responsible to maintain a high standard of cleanliness, from the tables, chairs and countertops to the floors, walls and windows and window frames.
  2. Take out trash from kitchen and dining room to the dumpsters.
  3. Clean out and wash trash cans three times a week.
  4. Maintain a clean mop bucket with water and mop throughout the day. This should be changed out as needed.
  5. Sweep and mop dining hall after dinner meal is served, daily.
  6. Stock needed snack items for participants.
  7. Notify Head Cook of supplies running low, including food items, silverware, cups, plates etc. so as to have them reordered after running out.
  8. Follow proper cleaning techniques, storing of chemicals properly and labeling products appropriately.
  9. Attend staff/department meetings as requested.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to operate institutional kitchen and culinary equipment. The employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time. Ability to stand and/or be physically active for up to two hours or more at a time. Must be able to walk, run, reach and grasp with hands and arms, lift, bend and stoop. The employee will lift or move up to 50 pounds at a time, daily. Requires lifting hot heavy objects and working with sharp tools.

Working Conditions:

Works in a kitchen and dining room setting. Will work in a variety of temperature ranges, including deep freezer units, walk-ins and hot summer days with a running oven.

Miscellaneous:

The Salvation Army does have a dress code. For the kitchen and dining room areas, you should be prepared to adhere to food safety and health department suggestions of close-toed, non-slip shoes, long pants to cover legs and ankles, hair nets or equivalent, and aprons when needed.
