Sterling Engineering is looking for a Senior Structural Engineer to support heavy industrial projects, with a strong focus on metals and steel mill facilities. This role is based in Merrillville, IN with a hybrid schedule (3 days in office, flexible selection). Travel is less than 20%, primarily local.

Job Summary:
The Senior Structural Engineer will lead structural design and inspection efforts for steel mill and heavy industrial facilities. This individual will perform detailed engineering calculations, support project execution, conduct site inspections, and mentor junior team members. The role requires strong technical independence and hands-on industrial experience.

Job Duties:
  • Perform structural engineering calculations and detailed design for heavy industrial facilities
  • Conduct inspections of steel mills and prepare section and condition reports
  • Support metals-related structural design projects from concept through execution
  • Assist with field work, installation checks, and on-site problem solving
  • Serve as Project Lead for select single-discipline projects (scope development, estimating hours, reviewing drawings)
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to gather project information
  • Manage scope, schedule, and budget for assigned work
  • Support and mentor junior structural team members
  • Contribute to technical development and continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • 7+ years of structural design experience in metals, steel mills, refinery, chemical, or heavy industrial facilities
  • Experience performing field inspections in industrial environments
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit (BIM experience preferred)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and mentor junior engineers
  • PE license preferred
  • Valid driverโ€™s license required
