Summer Structural Engineer Internship information

What is a summer structural engineer internship?

A Summer Structural Engineer Internship is a temporary position, typically lasting 8-12 weeks over the summer, where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience working alongside professional structural engineers. Interns often assist with designing, analyzing, and inspecting buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects. This internship helps participants develop practical skills, learn industry standards, and build a professional network, all of which are valuable for a future career in structural engineering.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a summer structural engineer internship?

As a Summer Structural Engineer Intern, you can expect to assist with project design, drafting, and analysis under the guidance of experienced engineers. Interns often participate in site visits, help prepare technical reports, and use engineering software to model structures. You'll collaborate with team members from various disciplines, gaining exposure to real-world engineering challenges and workflows. This hands-on experience helps you apply classroom concepts to practical scenarios and provides valuable insight into the daily routines of structural engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer structural engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Structural Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, coursework in structural analysis and design, and progress toward a civil or structural engineering degree. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software like SAP2000 or ETABS is typically expected. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication skills help interns excel in collaborative and fast-paced project environments. These abilities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to engineering projects while building a foundation for a successful engineering career.

What is the difference between Summer Structural Engineer Internship vs Summer Civil Engineering Internship?

AspectSummer Structural Engineer InternshipSummer Civil Engineering Internship
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of Civil or Structural Engineering programEnrolled in or recent graduate of Civil Engineering program
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, construction sites, consulting companiesDesign firms, construction sites, government agencies
Industry UsageFocuses on structural design, analysis, and safetyBroader civil projects including transportation, environmental, and structural work

The Summer Structural Engineer Internship specifically targets students interested in structural design and analysis, often involving concrete, steel, and load calculations. In contrast, the Summer Civil Engineering Internship covers a wider range of civil projects, including transportation, environmental, and infrastructure work. Both internships provide hands-on experience in engineering environments, but the structural internship is more specialized in structural systems and safety considerations.

Job description

Job Title: Structural EngineerJob Description

This role offers the opportunity to join a multi-disciplinary architecture and engineering firm as part of a collaborative structural engineering team working on a wide range of industrial, institutional, and commercial projects. The team delivers full-service consulting and design/build services and partners closely with in-house architectural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines, providing steady workload and diverse project experience. You will contribute to projects such as schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities, working alongside experienced licensed engineers in a stable, employee-owned company that emphasizes long-term careers, professional growth, and a supportive, family-focused culture.

Responsibilities
  • Utilize computer design software to perform structural design and analysis, including brace and moment frame design and general connection types used in building construction.
  • Interpret and apply the structural sections of building codes, including seismic, wind, and snow drift loading requirements.
  • Design and lay out commercial and industrial building steel systems, including foundations and related structural components.
  • Perform detailed design of structural systems using steel, concrete, concrete block, and other common structural materials for building projects.
  • Develop complete construction document packages based on project requirements and applications, coordinating closely with mechanical, architectural, and electrical disciplines.
  • Direct drafting personnel in the preparation of drawings and project documents, and carefully check construction documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Review job-specific material specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements and applicable standards.
  • Attend client meetings, including project review, construction, and project closeout meetings, to clearly understand and address owner requirements and expectations.
  • Help clients determine project requirements and develop engineering scopes of work based on those needs.
  • Review project shop drawings and submittals for conformance with design intent and specifications.
  • Conduct on-site inspections of structural system installations to verify compliance with design documents and field conditions.
  • Perform on-site surveys to establish and document accurate existing field conditions for use in design and detailing.
  • Provide guidance to drafting personnel, offer feedback, and verify the quality and accuracy of their work.
  • Perform your own drafting in AutoCAD and/or Revit when needed to support project schedules and deliverables.
  • Communicate effectively with general contractors and subcontractors by answering questions, clarifying design intent, and supporting the construction process.
  • Contribute to a collaborative team environment and support continuous improvement in design quality, efficiency, and client service.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • Some structural engineering experience gained through work or internship; new graduates with relevant experience are welcome.
  • Proficiency in creating drawings using AutoCAD or Revit.
  • Ability to use RISA software for both 2D and 3D structural modeling, or proficiency in similar structural engineering software with a willingness to learn RISA.
  • Fundamental knowledge of structural engineering principles, including structural design, structural analysis, and structural concrete design.
  • Ability to interpret and apply structural building code provisions related to seismic, wind, and snow drift loading.
  • Comfort with visiting job sites occasionally and moving around within building structures to perform inspections and surveys.
  • Strong initiative, a self-learner mindset, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and professional development.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with clients, project team members, and construction partners.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in design calculations, drawings, and documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in structural engineering for industrial, institutional, or commercial projects (non-residential) is highly valued.
  • Ability to perform building layouts, create detailed drawings, review shop drawings, and respond to questions from general contractors and subcontractors.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a strong plus.
  • Revit proficiency beyond basic drafting is beneficial, especially for coordinating with other disciplines.
  • Experience with industrial projects and/or design/build project delivery is preferred.
  • Familiarity with RISA 3D and related structural analysis tools.
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary consulting environment alongside architectural, mechanical, and electrical teams.
  • Interest in long-term career growth, including progression into project management, leadership, and potential stock ownership in an employee-owned environment.
  • Commitment to being an “engineer for life,” maintaining hands-on technical involvement throughout your career.

This position is based in a standard consulting firm environment located near downtown Evansville and close to the Ohio River. You will work in an office setting alongside structural, mechanical, architectural, and electrical professionals, supported by experienced drafters and modern design tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and RISA. The culture is laid-back and family-focused, with flexibility for family and child-related events and a strong emphasis on work-life balance. The company is employee-owned, and engineers who demonstrate long-term potential may be considered for stock ownership on a case-by-case basis. The environment is stable and tenure is high, with many team members having more than a decade of service. Benefits include a 401(k) with company contributions based on a percentage of profits, annual performance reviews with at least cost-of-living raises, yearly bonuses, and comprehensive health benefits with a significant portion of premiums covered, as well as dental, vision, and life insurance. Flexible vacation time (typically frontloaded) and paid holidays further support a positive and sustainable work experience.
