Work EnvironmentEntry-level, team-based projects, hardware and embedded systemsMid-level to senior projects, embedded systems, software-focused
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, IoT devicesEmbedded systems, IoT, industrial automation
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding entry-level roles, career progressionClarifying job responsibilities, skill requirements

The main difference between a Junior Firmware Engineer and a Firmware Developer lies in experience and responsibility level. Junior Firmware Engineers are typically entry-level, focusing on learning and supporting firmware development, while Firmware Developers are more experienced, handling complex projects independently. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and industry usage, but the Firmware Developer role generally involves more advanced tasks and autonomy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior firmware engineer?

A Junior Firmware Engineer typically needs a solid foundation in embedded systems programming, knowledge of C/C++ languages, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, integrated development environments (IDEs), and version control systems like Git is important, while certifications in embedded systems can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork abilities help individuals excel in this role. These skills ensure reliable firmware development, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration within engineering teams, all critical for delivering robust embedded products.

What are some common challenges a junior firmware engineer may face when starting in this role, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Firmware Engineers often encounter challenges such as understanding legacy codebases, debugging hardware-software interactions, and adapting to rapid development cycles. It's helpful to proactively seek guidance from senior engineers, regularly review documentation, and utilize debugging tools specific to embedded systems. Participating in code reviews and collaborating closely with hardware teams can also accelerate learning and help overcome initial hurdles.

What is a junior firmware engineer?

Junior Firmware Engineers are entry-level professionals who help design, develop, test, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that controls electronic devices and hardware. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced engineers, assisting with coding, debugging, and troubleshooting firmware issues. Junior Firmware Engineers often collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure that the firmware interacts correctly with the device's physical components. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those new to the field who are looking to build experience in embedded systems and firmware development.

Job Title: Embedded Software EngineerJob Description

We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer to support the sustainment, modernization, and enhancement of the U.S. Navy's SPY-1 Radar System in Crane, Indiana. This engineer will play a critical role in designing, developing, integrating, and maintaining embedded software solutions that support one of the Navy's most mission-critical radar and defense systems. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex real-time embedded software challenges, support legacy system modernization efforts, and contribute directly to national defense capabilities. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in embedded software development, system integration, software architecture, and C/C++ development within highly technical environments. Located in Crane, Indiana, this role supports advanced radar sustainment efforts in partnership with Navy stakeholders and multidisciplinary engineering teams, including software, systems, hardware, and test engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, maintain, and modernize embedded software applications supporting SPY-1 Radar and related defense system technologies.
  • Analyze existing software systems and legacy codebases to identify functionality, reverse-engineer requirements, and implement scalable software solutions.
  • Lead software modernization initiatives, including refactoring and enhancement of existing C/C++ applications.
  • Drive system-level software design across embedded and real-time computing environments.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, systems engineering, and test teams to ensure successful software integration and mission performance.
  • Develop and implement software architectures that prioritize performance, maintainability, reliability, and long-term sustainment.
  • Support hardware/software integration activities, troubleshooting efforts, and performance optimization in complex embedded environments.
  • Define and execute software verification and validation strategies, including automated testing and system-level evaluations.
  • Participate in requirements development, requirements traceability, configuration management, and design reviews.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across software development activities.
  • Support software deployment, system integration, and testing efforts within laboratory and operational environments.
  • Contribute to Agile development activities, technical planning, and engineering process improvements.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of Embedded Software Development experience.
  • Experience in the Full Lifecycle Development.
  • Proficiency in programming languages: C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience with automated test frameworks, scripting, and test tools used for software validation (Python, MATLAB, or similar).
  • Ability to obtain Secret Clearance.
  • Proficient in software validation, bash, cameo, doors, and azure devops.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience supporting SPY-1 Radar, Aegis Combat System, SPY-6, naval combat systems, radar systems, sensor systems, or mission-critical defense platforms.
  • Experience within Department of Defense (DoD), Navy, aerospace, defense, or government-contracted engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with radar systems, signal processing applications, RF systems, or tactical weapon systems.
  • Experience supporting software sustainment, modernization, or reverse-engineering efforts on legacy systems.
Work Environment

The role is primarily onsite at the facility, with a preference for 100% onsite work but potentially open to an arranged hybrid schedule. Employees work a 9/80 schedule, operating in an office setting and utilizing lab environments as needed. The opportunity includes working on mission-critical technology that protects National Security, with the chance to engage in all phases from design to sustainment. The position offers long-term stable work with projected product operation through 2065 and high growth potential as the demand scales.
