Job description

Overview


We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Controller with CPA or CPA Candidate to join our dynamic finance team. The ideal candidate brings 3+ years of progressive accounting experience and holds a CPA license (or is actively pursuing CPA certification), with a strong command of financial reporting, reconciliations, and compliance. This position takes ownership of core accounting functions and serves as a key contributor to the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial records, while mentoring junior staff as needed.


Duties

  • Prepare and analyze budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and providing variance analysis to leadership.
  • Perform account analysis and reconciliations, identifying and resolving discrepancies to maintain accurate financial records.
  • Lead tax preparation processes, including gathering and reviewing documentation, coordinating with external tax preparers, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Oversee payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Record and review journal entries, ensuring proper documentation and adherence to GAAP.
  • Manage corporate accounting functions, including preparation of financial statements and monthly/quarterly reporting packages.
  • Oversee accounts receivable, including invoicing, collections, and aging analysis.
  • Lead technical accounting projects, researching and applying accounting standards to complex transactions.
  • Support accounting engagements, including audit preparation, documentation, and compliance checks.
  • Support the accounts payable cycle, including reviewing vendor invoices, approving payments, and overseeing check/ACH disbursements.
  • Ensure internal controls are followed and recommend process improvements where appropriate.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA license required, or actively pursuing CPA certification with progress toward completion.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Controller in progressive accounting.
  • Proficiency in budgeting techniques and financial forecasting.
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting software; experience with QuickBooks Online (QBO) preferred.
  • Advanced analytical skills for account analysis, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Solid understanding of tax regulations and payroll processing requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with journal entries, corporate accounting practices, and GAAP application.
  • Strong understanding of accounts receivable and accounts payable processes and best practices.
  • Technical accounting knowledge sufficient to research and resolve complex accounting issues.
  • Non-Profit and Grant Funding accounting experience (audit or tax) is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Fluent English (spoken and written) is a must. Conversational Spanish is a plus.
