Strong analytical skills and proficiency with financial software are essential for this role.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

An Assistant Group Controller typically earns less than $10,000 a month, as this role usually requires a degree and accounting experience. However, some high-paying jobs without a degree include sales managers, real estate brokers, or skilled trades like electricians and plumbers, especially with experience and certifications. These roles often rely on skills, licenses, or performance rather than formal education alone.

How does an Assistant Group Controller typically collaborate with different departments within an organization?

As an Assistant Group Controller, you will regularly collaborate with various departments such as operations, sales, and human resources to ensure accurate financial reporting and to support budgeting and forecasting activities. This role often acts as a liaison between finance and other teams, providing insights and clarifying financial data to non-financial managers. Effective communication and the ability to translate complex financial information into actionable business recommendations are key strengths for success in this collaboration-heavy environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Assistant Group Controller, and why are they important?

To excel as an Assistant Group Controller, you need strong financial analysis skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and typically a degree in finance or accounting, often supplemented by a CPA or similar certification. Expertise in ERP systems such as SAP or Oracle, as well as advanced proficiency in Excel, is commonly required. Exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate financial reporting, support strategic decision-making, and facilitate collaboration across business units.

How much is the salary of a controller?

The salary of a controller varies depending on industry, location, and experience, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $150,000 annually. Assistant or junior controllers usually earn less, while senior controllers with extensive experience can earn higher compensation, often supplemented with bonuses and benefits.

Job description

Assistant Controller

Upscale Hotel Property

We are working with a well-established hospitality group operating multiple full-service properties. The foundation is in place. The expectation now is stronger financial discipline, sharper reporting, and tighter alignment between finance and operations.

They are looking for an Assistant Controller who can step in, take ownership of the day-to-day accounting flow, and become a reliable partner to both the Controller and operational leadership.

If you have experience closing books in a high-volume hospitality environment and want broader exposure across multiple properties, this is a strong step forward.

You will be directly involved in the financial rhythm of the business, not observing it from a distance.

Your focus will include:

  • Owning key parts of the month-end close across multiple properties
  • Ensuring financials are accurate, timely, and aligned with GAAP
  • Working closely with department leaders to explain results, not just report them
  • Supporting budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis with a clear understanding of operational drivers
  • Maintaining integrity of the general ledger and strengthening reconciliation processes
  • Assisting with audit preparation and ensuring documentation is clean and defensible
  • Identifying inefficiencies in current processes and tightening them where needed

This is a hands-on role. You will be in the details, but also expected to understand the bigger picture.

  • It is not a purely transactional accounting position
  • It is not isolated from operations
  • It is not a role where you wait for direction

What They Are Looking For

  • Background in hospitality accounting, ideally within a hotel or multi-unit environment
  • Experience managing or heavily supporting month-end close
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting
  • Comfort working across multiple departments and personalities
  • Ability to stay organized and accurate in a fast-paced setting
  • Experience with ERP systems and property-level systems such as PMS or POS platforms

This role suits someone who has outgrown a Senior Accountant position or is currently in an Assistant Controller role and wants broader exposure.

  • Direct exposure to leadership and decision-making
  • Multi-property experience that strengthens your long-term profile
  • Opportunity to grow into a Controller-level position over time
  • A role where your work impacts operations, not just reports

This position operates in a fast-moving hospitality environment. Accuracy and timeliness matter, especially during closing cycles. The right person will be comfortable managing priorities and maintaining a high standard under pressure.
