Job description

Assistant Controller

If you are a bank accounting professional, visualize stepping into a newly created key leadership spot right under the Controller in a growing bank and its holding company that you can make your own.  This is the unique opportunity that our firm has been tasked with as we partner with a CFO we have known for over fifteen years.  As an executive search firm, we specialize in the banking vertical all over the United States specific to roles in Accounting, Finance, Audit and Risk.  That’s what we do, it’s all we do.

In this institution, Assistant Controller means you’re guiding the team through journal entries, accruals, and adjustments, then diving in to review everything with a keen analytical eye.  Once the numbers are solid, you’ll be explaining the variances — why this month looked different from last month or the budget — and turning those insights into something meaningful for leadership. You’ll also lead the consolidation of the Bank into the Bank Holding Company, pull together clean monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with all the supporting schedules, and keep everything moving on time.

The key piece will be on the SEC side, you’ll oversee Financial Reporting for our 8-Ks, 10-Qs, and 10-Ks, keeping all the supporting schedules organized and ready. Beyond the technical work, you’ll partner closely with the Controller — reviewing trends, digging into variances, and spotting areas where the company can keep improving. You’ll work with our external tax team on corporate and state tax calculations, maintain our deferred tax assets, and make sure everything flows properly into both internal and external reports.

On the controls side, you’ll be the go-to person working hand-in-hand with both external auditors and internal auditors to keep us strong on SOX for the Bank and the Holding Company. You’ll coordinate the quarterly and year-end audit processes, stay engaged with internal audit year-round, and actively strengthen our accounting policies and procedures. You’ll constantly be hunting for gaps, looking for ways to make things better, and finding opportunities to automate repetitive work so the team can focus on higher-value stuff. You’ll also own the regulatory reporting — making sure Call Reports and Federal Reserve reports are accurate and filed on time without any drama.

Probably the most fun part? You’ll work directly with senior financial leadership on bigger initiatives across the bank — whether that’s implementing new systems or driving strategic projects. You’ll be the person bringing sharp financial insight to the table to help them make better decisions.   On the technical side, you’re the go-to expert. When complex accounting questions come up around GAAP, SEC, regulatory, or SOX topics, you’ll do the research, give clear guidance, and help keep us compliant and confident. On the personnel side, you’ll help lead and develop the accounting team alongside the Corporate Controller. That includes recruiting talent, training and mentoring your people, and building real capability in the department. In short, this isn’t just a “run the close and file reports” job.  It’s a true #2 accounting leadership role where you’ll blend technical depth, process improvement, team leadership, and strategic partnership with senior management in a regulated banking environment. If this sounds compelling, please inquire today in confidence.
