Job Description:This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 20-24 hours per week) Student Information Technology Assistant position, with the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine Information Technology team at Oregon State University (OSU).
The college supports veterinary education, clinical care, research, and outreach that improve animal and human health, and the IT team supports the technology behind those activities.
Unlike many campus technology positions, this role offers direct mentoring from professional IT staff in a small, collaborative team. The student will gain hands-on experience, develop customer service and technical skills, and earn increasing responsibility by demonstrating reliability, initiative, sound judgment, and successful completion of training milestones. We are seeking a curious, dependable, and self-motivated student who wants meaningful professional experience and the opportunity to contribute to the college's mission.
Why Join CCVM IT?
As part of the CCVM IT team, you'll gain experience with:
Customer service and technical support
Enterprise technology systems
Microsoft 365 services
Computer deployment and lifecycle management
Technical documentation
Technology projects and process improvement
Veterinary teaching, clinical, and research environments
We are looking for students who are curious, dependable, and self-motivated. Successful student employees take initiative, enjoy learning new skills, and actively contribute to the team's work and mission.
Student employees are not simply supporting computers and technology systems. They help enable veterinary education, clinical care, research, and outreach activities that improve animal and human health.
Students who value purpose-driven work and want to contribute to something larger than themselves often find the College of Veterinary Medicine to be a uniquely rewarding place to work.
Student employees work directly with experienced IT professionals and advanced student staff who provide mentoring, guidance, and real-world exposure to technology operations in higher education, research, and clinical environments.
Position Duties
Provide friendly and professional customer service by phone, in person, and through IT service requests to faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
Answer phones and assist walk-in customers.
Create and update IT support tickets, follow documented procedures, and escalate issues appropriately.
Assist with workstation setup, deployment, peripheral installation, and routine technical support.
Organize, track and maintain technology equipment, inventory and assets.
Support classroom, conference room, and meeting technology.
Assist with employee onboarding and offboarding activities, technical documentation, and knowledge articles.
Create and maintain technical documentation.
Contribute to technology projects and operational improvements as skills and trust are demonstrated.
Learn and follow established IT procedures and standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Growth and Development
This position is designed as a developmental role. Student employees begin by learning customer service, support processes, and the technology environment of the college.
As skills, reliability, and professional judgment are demonstrated, additional responsibilities and opportunities are introduced. Trust, autonomy, and technical responsibilities are earned through performance and successful completion of training milestones.
Advancement through the program is based on demonstrated performance rather than time in position.
Transferable Skill Development
OSU is committed to ensuring students are prepared for success after graduation through intentional skill development as student employees. The competencies students develop while working at OSU are defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as the essential skills employers seek in their hires. In this position, students learn and build vital career-readiness skills in the primary areas below:
Communication, Teamwork, Technology, Professionalism
