Internship Senate information

What is a Senate internship?

Internship positions in the Senate are temporary roles designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the legislative branch of government. Senate interns typically assist with research, administrative tasks, attending hearings, and supporting the staff of a Senator or Senate committee. These internships provide valuable insight into the legislative process, the workings of government, and public policy. They also offer networking opportunities and the chance to build professional skills in a fast-paced environment.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Senate internship?

As a Senate intern, you may be involved in a variety of tasks, including conducting legislative research, drafting memos or correspondence, attending hearings, and assisting with constituent services. Interns often help staff prepare briefing materials for senators and support the logistical needs of the office. The specific projects you work on can depend on the committee or office you are assigned to, but you can expect a dynamic environment that offers insight into the legislative process and the opportunity to collaborate with experienced professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senate intern?

To thrive as a Senate Intern, you typically need strong research abilities, written and verbal communication skills, and a solid academic background, often in political science, public policy, or a related field. Familiarity with legislative databases, Microsoft Office Suite, and research tools is commonly expected. Professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively are standout soft skills in this role. These qualities are vital for supporting legislative staff effectively, handling sensitive information, and contributing to the fast-paced environment of the Senate.

What is the difference between Internship Senate vs Internship Coordinator?

Job description

Americans United for Life seeks highly qualified and motivated undergraduate and graduate students to serve as legal interns. AUL internships are outstanding opportunities for exceptional students committed to life issues.
Interns are expected to work in AUL's offices located in Washington, DC. Internships are typically unpaid, with some exceptions, and may be undertaken for credit (as approved by their school) or to fulfill other graduation requirements. While many internships are hosted in the summer months, internships may be considered on a rolling basis throughout the school year.
Requirements
Qualifications for becoming an intern include a commitment to pro-life issues and demonstrated excellence both inside and outside the classroom. Additionally, we are looking for individuals who stand out to the faculty of their school.
AUL internships are customized for each student, based on schedule availability, area of interest, and skills.
Internship Testimonials
"The highlight of my internship at AUL was our frequent visits to Capitol Hill, attending several hearings and coalition meetings with Congressional leaders. The first-hand experience was incredibly beneficial because we were able to see how the work we were doing at AUL was actually relevant and impactful. Our projects and assignments went beyond meaningless busy work. At AUL, the interns play an important role and visiting the Capitol made that evident. Also, the intern office is awesome; we had a great view!" -Autumn Swain, University of Virginia
"AUL has the best pro-life internship around. What makes AUL stand out is having time to be face to face with professionals who specialize in and work on pro-life issues every day and getting to go in person to a number of hearings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill." -Westin Jablonowski, U.S. Senate staffer
