What is an internship bank?

Internship Bank positions are temporary roles offered by banks to students or recent graduates who want to gain practical experience in the financial sector. These internships often involve working with various banking departments such as retail banking, corporate finance, risk management, or customer service. Interns can expect to learn about banking operations, financial analysis, and client interactions while developing valuable professional skills. Many banks use internships as a way to evaluate potential candidates for future full-time employment. The duration of these internships can vary, typically ranging from a few weeks to several months.

What does an internship bank intern do?

As a bank intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects ranging from assisting with customer account management to supporting financial analysis and reporting. Interns often help with administrative tasks, data entry, and research, while also participating in team meetings or shadowing experienced bankers. You may also be involved in special projects such as process improvements or market research, depending on the department. This hands-on experience helps you develop practical skills and gain a comprehensive understanding of the banking sector’s day-to-day operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a bank intern?

To thrive as a Bank Intern, you need a foundational understanding of finance or accounting principles, usually supported by current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with banking software, Microsoft Office Suite, and basic data analysis tools is often expected. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are essential soft skills for success. These skills and qualities are important because they enable interns to efficiently support banking operations, interact with clients and colleagues, and adapt quickly in a professional environment.

About the Position:
First Internet Bank provides paid internship opportunities designed to give students hands-on experience in a professional banking environment and real-world exposure to business and banking operations. As the Operations Intern you will be assigned to an operations-related business area, which may include account or loan operations, process improvement, project support, relationship banking, or another operational function. You will contribute to meaningful work, collaborate with team members, and develop an understanding of how the assigned area supports the Bank, its employees, and its customers. Specific training, projects, systems, and learning objectives will be defined through a department-specific onboarding plan.
What You Will Do:
  • Learn the responsibilities, workflows, service standards, and business purpose of the assigned department through structured training, observation, and hands-on assignments.
  • Assist with operational projects, process implementation, project coordination, documentation, data collection, reporting, and administrative activities appropriate to the assigned area.
  • Support the review of procedures and workflows and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency, consistency, service, or controls.
  • Organize, maintain, image, or update files, records, project materials, and other business information in accordance with established requirements.
  • Conduct research and analysis related to operational trends, customer or employee needs, products, services, vendors, or industry practices, as applicable to the assignment.
  • Assist with testing, audits, process mapping, meeting documentation, training materials, presentations, or communications, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Bank and provide responsive, professional support to internal or external customers, partners, tenants, vendors, or visitors, as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, secure, and confidential information while following Bank policies, procedures, controls, and professional standards.
  • Demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, attention to detail, accountability, and a willingness to learn new processes and systems.
  • Perform other duties and complete additional learning assignments as requested.

What We're Looking For:
  • Currently pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree, preferably in business, operations management, project management, finance, sales, data analytics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in banking, business operations, customer service, process improvement, project support, or a related area.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with other data, process mapping, reporting, or presentation tools may be helpful depending on the assignment.
  • Strong organization, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage assigned priorities and deadlines, take initiative, and learn new concepts, processes, and systems.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly in writing, in conversation, or through presentations, as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Ability to meet the scheduling and on-site work expectations established for the internship program and assigned department.

Working Conditions/Demands:
  • Professional office setting.
  • Primarily sedentary position requiring long periods of time working at a computer.
  • Must be able to move throughout the office and buildings to obtain or relay information.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
