Job description

A technology company is seeking an experienced, hands-on Payroll Manager to provide interim leadership and ensure accurate, compliant payroll operations across the U.S. and Europe.


Responsibilities

  • Oversee end-to-end U.S. and international payroll operations
  • Work directly in Workday Payroll to run calculations, validate outputs, and troubleshoot issues
  • Manage payroll calendars, deadlines, reconciliations, funding, and vendor coordination
  • Ensure compliance with federal, multi-state, and local U.S. payroll tax requirements
  • Manage tax registrations, filings, amendments, unemployment taxes, local taxes, and year-end reporting
  • Oversee W-2 reconciliation, production, and filing
  • Lead and support a distributed payroll team
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex payroll and employee tax matters
  • Partner with HR, Finance, Legal, HRIS, and external payroll providers
  • Maintain payroll procedures, internal controls, and process documentation


Qualifications

  • 7+ years of payroll experience, including at least 2–3 years in a lead or management role
  • Advanced, hands-on Workday Payroll experience required
  • Experience processing payroll directly within Workday—not limited to Workday HCM, reporting, or oversight
  • Strong knowledge of federal, multi-state, and local U.S. payroll taxes
  • Experience with tax registrations, filings, amendments, and year-end payroll requirements
  • Multi-country payroll experience, including the U.S. and Europe
  • Experience leading distributed payroll teams
  • Ability to run payroll, troubleshoot issues, and operate independently from the start
  • Technology or SaaS industry experience
  • Exposure to equity-related payroll events, including RSUs, stock options, or ESPPs
  • Experience with payroll automation tools or international payroll providers
  • Certified Payroll Professional designation
  • Ability to consistently work Eastern Time business hours and maintain overlap with European payroll teams
