The Role:

The Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Manager - GM Defense is responsible for the strategic oversight, performance management, and operational execution of external logistics providers supporting defense and government-related programs. This role ensures that 3PL operations meet mission-critical requirements, including secure material handling, compliance with government regulations, and high reliability in support of defense customers.

The 3PL Manager serves as the key interface between GM Defense cross-functional teams and external logistics partners, driving operational excellence, compliance, and continuous improvement across inbound, outbound, and service parts distribution networks supporting defense programs.

What You Will Do (Responsibilities):

  • Establish and manage performance metrics (KPIs) aligned to defense program requirements, including delivery reliability, inventory accuracy, compliance, and responsiveness
  • Maintain inventory integrity across off-site locations through regular audits, issue investigation, and corrective action implementation
  • Lead structured business reviews with 3PL providers to ensure performance accountability and continuous improvement
  • Ensure full adherence to contractual agreements, service level requirements, and government compliance obligations
  • Oversee end-to-end logistics operations including warehousing, transportation, kitting, and distribution supporting defense programs
  • Partner with internal teams to ensure uninterrupted flow of material to support production schedules and customer commitments
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to supply chain disruptions, security, and regulatory compliance
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cost while maintaining or improving service and compliance standards
  • Lead digital and automation initiatives to enhance visibility, tracking, and control of material flows
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain, Procurement, Engineering, Finance, Quality, and Program Management teams to support defense program execution
  • Align 3PL strategies with GM Defense program priorities and customer requirements
  • Support sourcing, onboarding, and capability assessments of 3PL providers with defense logistics expertise
  • Ensure providers have the capacity, certifications, and infrastructure to support secure and scalable operations
  • Audit and maintain inventory
  • Lead with a compliance-first mindset while balancing cost, service, and operational efficiency
  • Drive disciplined execution and structured problem solving in a regulated environment
  • Influence internal and external stakeholders to achieve aligned outcomes
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, transparency, and operational rigor

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree
  • 5+ years relevant experience
  • Candidate must either be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee or refugee) or a non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required export control authorization
  • Strong understanding of warehouse operations, transportation, and distribution networks
  • Experience working in regulated environments or with compliance-driven processes
  • Proven ability to manage supplier performance and drive KPI-based accountability
  • Willing to travel and make trips to off-site locations as assigned or as needed

  • Experience with SAP and warehouse/logistics systems
  • Lean / Six Sigma or GMS experience
