Greater New York Mutual Insurance Company (GNY) is a super-regional leader in commercial property and casualty insurance. GNY is an A+ rated, financially stable company with more than 100 years of expertise in designing, underwriting, and providing insurance solutions for business owners and property managers.
At GNY, we recruit innovative thinkers, team players and confident risk-takers to carry on our rich tradition of underwriting excellence. The Underwriter Trainee Program offers a rare opportunity for individuals to receive intensive, hands-on training from expert professionals that can be directly transferred to the field.
Underwriters work in a demanding, fast-paced environment that is both challenging and rewarding. As an underwriter, you will engage in collaborative relationships with clients in order to develop innovative risk management strategies based on a client's unique risk profile. Effective analysis and implementation of these strategies requires great attention to detail and determination to find and execute successful solutions.
In this comprehensive training program, trainees will experience a combination of classroom training, self-study, and on-the-job assignments. Trainees will learn all aspects of insurance including rating, underwriting, claims and loss control. Specifically, all trainees will learn how to analyze risk exposures, evaluate insurance and risk management requests, and how to underwrite an insurance policy. As trainees develop these skills throughout the duration of the training, a higher level of responsibilities and tasks will be given. The technical knowledge and professional relationships gained through this program will provide you with a sense of the different roles within the insurance industry and a solid foundation for a career in insurance.
Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree in one or more of the following fields of study is preferred: Risk Management, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Math, and Sciences.
  • Obtain a passing score on the AINS 103: Exploring Commercial Insurance exam by week 3 of the training program. Course materials and exam preparation will be provided by GNY.
  • Within six months of being promoted to an underwriter, completion of the Associate in Insurance (AU) designation, with a concentration in Commercial Insurance is required.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to learn new systems and concepts quickly.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to organize data, multi-task and make decisions independently.
  • Create, develop, and foster strong relationships with others on all levels of the organization and brokerage community.

The salary range for this role is $54,600 - $95,500. The listed annual salary range posted for this position is subject to change and may vary depending on performance, education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, demonstrated proficiency in the competencies required for the role and business needs. Base pay is just one component of GNY's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards include eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus based on performance.
