What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Insurance Underwriter Trainee position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Insurance Underwriter Trainee, strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a bachelor’s degree in finance, business, or a related field are typically required. Familiarity with underwriting software and risk assessment tools, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, is highly valuable. Effective communication, teamwork, and eagerness to learn help candidates build relationships and adapt to changing guidelines. These skills are vital for making accurate risk decisions, supporting team objectives, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Will AI replace underwriting?

AI is increasingly used to assist insurance underwriters by automating data analysis and risk assessment, but it is unlikely to fully replace the role. How to get into underwriting with no experience?

To become an insurance underwriter trainee with no experience, focus on gaining relevant knowledge through courses in insurance principles, risk assessment, or finance. Entry-level roles often require strong analytical skills and attention to detail, and obtaining certifications like the Associate in Commercial Underwriting (AU) can improve prospects. Internships or assistant positions can also provide practical exposure to underwriting processes.

What does the typical career path look like for an Insurance Underwriter Trainee?

As an Insurance Underwriter Trainee, you will begin by learning the fundamentals of risk assessment, policy evaluation, and company underwriting guidelines under the supervision of experienced underwriters. Over time, trainees take on greater responsibilities, such as reviewing applications, making independent recommendations, and interacting more directly with agents and clients. Many trainees advance to Underwriter roles within one to two years, with opportunities for further specialization or progression into senior underwriter or management positions. Career growth often depends on performance, continued education, and acquiring professional certifications such as the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation.

How to start a career in insurance underwriting?

To start a career as an insurance underwriter trainee, obtain a bachelor's degree in fields like finance, business, or risk management. Gaining knowledge of insurance policies, risk assessment, and using underwriting software is essential, and some employers offer on-the-job training or entry-level positions to develop relevant skills.

Underwriter Trainee

RSUI Group

Atlanta, GA • On-site

Full-time

Job description

Launch Your Underwriting Career at RSUI
RSUI is hiring for a summer 2027 class of Underwriter Trainees in Atlanta, Georgia!
If you're finishing your degree and determining your underwriting career path, we'd like to make a case for commercial E&S. And more specifically - for RSUI.
RSUI is a wholesale specialty insurance carrier, which means we work exclusively through wholesale brokers to insure risks that fall outside the standard market. It's a relationship-driven, expertise-first world where creative problem solvers thrive and no two days look quite the same. We're looking for a talented group of Underwriter Trainees - driven, curious college graduates who are ready to learn this business from the inside out.
The Program
Our full-time Underwriter Trainee Academy is an approximate 12-month, rotational experience designed to give you a hands-on introduction to specialty underwriting - and to RSUI holistically. You won't be shadowing from the sidelines. You'll be right there in the game.
Over the course of the program, you'll rotate through each of our underwriting product lines, spending approximately four weeks with each, as well as rotations through our key support departments. By the time you finish, you'll have a working knowledge of how our business operates, and a clear sense of where you fit best within it.
This isn't a one-size-fits-all experience. We'll pay attention to what excites you, where your strengths show up, and what product line sparks your curiosity - and we'll shape the program around that as much as possible.
What You'll Do
  • Rotate through RSUI's underwriting product lines and support departments, building context and connections at every stop
  • Work alongside experienced underwriters who are generous with their time and invested in your growth
  • Attend underwriting meetings and observe how decisions get made on complex, specialty risks
  • Complete an individual capstone project that addresses a real business challenge and present takeaways to RSUI's executive leadership
  • Join broker seminars and occasional marketing trips, getting early exposure to the relationship side of this business
  • Complete training and development touchpoints focused on both technical and soft skills, including a path toward relevant insurance designations

The Path from Here
Trainees who complete the program and demonstrate the skillset, judgment, and work ethic we're looking for will be well-positioned to transition into an Associate Underwriter role - RSUI's foundational underwriting position and the launchpad for a full underwriting career here.
We aim to provide a personalized and meaningful experience. Those who go through this program will get face time, mentorship, and real opportunities.
What We're Looking For
  • A college degree completed before August 1, 2027 - all majors are welcome. A background in Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, or a related business field is a plus, as is any demonstrated interest in underwriting through coursework, internships, or hands-on experience.
  • A history of high achievement with an always-learning mentality and the work ethic to back it up
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills - you're someone people enjoy working with and learn to rely on
  • Comfort working independently and managing your own time and priorities, while also collaborating with your team and cross-functionally throughout RSUI

About RSUI
RSUI Group, Inc. is a Berkshire Hathaway company established in 1988 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. We operate exclusively in the wholesale specialty market, which means our underwriters build deep expertise and strong relationships. Our culture is high-performance and team-oriented, and we invest meaningfully in the development of our people.
During the training program, trainees will work five days per week in our Atlanta office. Upon transitioning to the Associate Underwriter role, this position follows RSUI's standard hybrid schedule of three days per week in office.
We're ready to invest in the next generation of underwriters at RSUI. If you're up for the challenge, we'd love to hear from you.
