What does an insurance benefits advisor do?

An Insurance Benefits Advisor helps individuals and businesses understand, select, and manage insurance benefits such as health, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage. They assess clients’ needs, explain different policy options, and assist with enrollment and claims processes. Their goal is to ensure clients have the right coverage to meet their financial and health needs, while also staying compliant with regulations. Advisors often work for insurance companies, brokerages, or as independent consultants, and provide ongoing support as clients’ needs change.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance benefits advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Insurance Benefits Advisor, you need a solid understanding of insurance products, policies, and regulations, often supported by a relevant license such as a state insurance producer license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, quoting tools, and benefits administration platforms is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal, active listening, and problem-solving skills help advisors build trust and effectively address client needs. These competencies are essential for ensuring clients receive suitable coverage while maintaining compliance and fostering lasting relationships.

How does an insurance benefits advisor typically collaborate with other departments to ensure clients receive comprehensive coverage solutions?

Insurance Benefits Advisors often work closely with underwriting, claims, and sales teams to provide holistic solutions for clients. They collaborate with underwriters to assess risk and design appropriate benefits packages, and they coordinate with claims representatives to address client concerns or exceptions. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Advisors need to relay client feedback and regulatory updates, ensuring all departments are aligned in delivering tailored and compliant coverage options.

How do insurance benefits advisors get paid?

Insurance benefits advisors typically earn commissions based on the policies they sell or renew, which are paid by insurance companies. Some may also receive a salary or a combination of salary and commissions, especially if working for an agency or firm. Compensation structures can vary depending on the employer and the specific role.

Is being an insurance benefits advisor worth it?

Insurance benefits advisors help clients understand and select insurance plans, often working in office or client-facing environments. The role can offer a stable income, opportunities for certification, and the chance to develop sales and communication skills, making it a viable career choice for those interested in the insurance industry.

Employment: Full-time

The Opportunity

We're recruiting an Employee Benefits Advisor for an established insurance and risk management organization in the Denver area.

This opportunity is geared toward an Employee Benefits professional with a strong client-facing and commercial orientation. We're particularly interested in people who understand employer-sponsored benefits and can combine industry knowledge with relationship development, consultative conversations, and new-business activity.

The ideal profile is more than a benefits service professional. We're looking for someone comfortable operating as an advisor, developing relationships with employers and helping clients navigate important benefits decisions.

What We're Looking For

Relevant backgrounds may include:

  • Employee Benefits brokerage
  • Group Benefits
  • Benefits consulting
  • Employee Benefits sales or production
  • Employer-sponsored health and benefits programs
  • Benefits strategy
  • New business development within Employee Benefits

The strongest candidates will have experience developing employer relationships and contributing to business growth rather than working exclusively in an internal service or administrative capacity.

Potentially Relevant Titles

You might currently be an:

  • Employee Benefits Advisor
  • Employee Benefits Producer
  • Benefits Advisor
  • Benefits Producer
  • Employee Benefits Consultant
  • Benefits Consultant
  • Employee Benefits Sales Executive
  • Group Benefits Consultant
  • Employee Benefits Broker

We're also open to candidates whose titles differ if their experience clearly includes Employee Benefits advisory and business-development responsibilities.

What Will Make Someone Stand Out?

We're particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Employee Benefits or Group Benefits expertise
  • New-business development or production experience
  • Prospecting and relationship-building ability
  • Experience working with employer clients
  • Consultative and advisory selling
  • Ability to develop relationships with HR, People, Finance, and executive stakeholders
  • Experience building or developing a book of business
  • Strong communication and relationship-management skills
  • Knowledge of employer-sponsored benefit strategies

Experience with self-funded plans, alternative funding strategies, plan design, or complex employer benefit programs may also be valuable.

Why Consider It?

This is an opportunity to join an established organization where Employee Benefits professionals can combine industry expertise, client relationships, and business development.

For someone who enjoys the commercial side of Employee Benefits but also wants to operate as a strategic advisor to clients, this could offer an attractive next step in the Denver market.

Compensation

  • $61K-$105K annual pay range
  • Compensation dependent on experience and/or qualifications
  • Performance bonus
  • Total compensation includes pay + performance bonus + benefits

Benefits

  • Benefits package provided as part of total compensation

Specific benefit-plan details were not provided.

If you've built your career around Employee Benefits and enjoy developing new relationships as much as advising existing ones, we'd like to hear from you.
