What does an inside sales representative trainee do?

An Inside Sales Representative Trainee is an entry-level team member who learns how to sell products or services by communicating with customers primarily via phone, email, or online platforms. Their main responsibilities include generating leads, qualifying prospects, making sales presentations, and supporting the sales process under the guidance of senior staff. Trainees receive training in product knowledge, sales techniques, and customer relationship management to prepare them for a full sales role. This position is often a stepping stone to becoming a full Inside Sales Representative. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce and proficiency in Microsoft Office are typically expected, and some employers may prefer candidates pursuing or holding sales-related certifications. Persistence, active listening, and the ability to build rapport over the phone are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for effectively generating leads, nurturing client relationships, and achieving sales targets in a competitive environment.

This role serves as a selling extension of the field sales team by supporting quoting activities, owning assigned customer accounts, and ensuring timely followup and closure of all quotations.

The Inside Sales Representative plays a critical role in driving responsiveness, improving quotetowin conversion, and generating incremental volume through proactive customer engagement, while maintaining close alignment with territory sales representatives.

This is a sales role with direct accountability for commercial outcomes - not a customer service or orderentry position.

The position is performed Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional overnight or weekend hours as required. Limited occasional travel may be required, primarily for sales meetings, training, or customer engagements in support of the field sales team.

Quote Management & Execution

  • Prepare and issue customer quotes for assigned accounts and designated quoting activities, including being the primary quote owner for complex or timeintensive quotes (e.g., tapered insulation quotes).
  • Provide quote support to field sales representatives for standard daytoday quoting as needed to ensure fast response times, particularly during periods of high salesrep workload.
  • Monitor all open quotes within the assigned region, regardless of who generated the quote, to ensure timely followup and resolution.
  • Proactively follow up on open quotes by contacting customers and/or sales representatives to establish outcomes and next steps.
  • Accurately record quote status, outcomes (won / lost / no decision), and relevant feedback in Salesforce.

Assigned Account & House Account Ownership

  • Own and manage a defined group of assigned customer accounts ("house accounts") with full responsibility for quoting, followup, and relationship management.
  • Serve as the primary commercial contact for assigned customers, ensuring consistent engagement and responsiveness.
  • Identify growth opportunities within assigned accounts and actively pursue incremental business.

Outbound Sales & Demand Generation

  • Conduct outbound calling to existing and prospective customers within the assigned region to pursue new opportunities, follow up on historical activity, and generate incremental EPS volume.
  • Reengage inactive or dormant customers to uncover new projects and quoting opportunities.
  • Support territory sales objectives through proactive pipeline development and customer outreach.

Sales Team Support & Coordination

  • Act as a quoting and sales support resource for field sales representatives to improve responsiveness, efficiency, and customer experience.
  • Partner with field sales reps to coordinate customer engagement, followup strategies, and account priorities.
  • Assist in scheduling and coordinating product knowledge sessions and contractor meetings in support of local sales representatives.
  • Provide feedback and insight to sales leadership regarding quote activity, customer responsiveness, and competitive dynamics.

CRM & Commercial Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and timely records in Salesforce, including quote status, customer interactions, and win/loss information.
  • Capture customer feedback and competitive intelligence to support pricing strategy, sales planning, and market understanding.
  • Support sales leadership with quote tracking, followup visibility, and regional activity insights.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated sales mindset with comfort in outbound customer engagement and followup.
  • Ability to manage multiple quotes and customer interactions simultaneously with a high level of organization and urgency.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact confidently with customers, sales reps, and internal stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems preferred.
  • Selfmotivated, disciplined, and comfortable working independently while remaining closely aligned with a sales team.

Education and Experience:

This role is well suited for earlycareer sales professionals and highpotential talent seeking development toward a future field or territory sales role.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (business, construction management, or related field).
  • Sales, inside sales, or commercial support experience in construction materials or a related industry preferred.
  • Experience owning quotes, customer follow up, or account responsibility strongly valued.
    • (Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.)

Working Conditions:

This position typically operates during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Occasional flexibility may be required to accommodate meetings across time zones or address critical business needs. The employee is expected to comply with all company policies, including those related to data security, confidentiality, acceptable use of technology, and remote work standards.
