Industrial Engineering focuses on improving processes and systems across various industries, while Mechanical Engineering emphasizes designing and developing mechanical devices and systems. Both fields share some credentials and work environments but serve different core functions in the industry.

What Is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering is an engineering specialty that combines physical and social sciences with engineering principles. This field of engineering focuses on analyzing and optimizing manufacturing production processes to create more productive and profitable systems. Industrial engineers research a system’s current state, design improvement plans, and eliminate any waste of manpower, energy, money, and materials.

How does an industrial engineer typically collaborate with other departments to improve operational efficiency?

Industrial engineers often work closely with teams in production, quality assurance, logistics, and IT to identify bottlenecks and streamline processes. Job description

Now Brewing - manager engineering, Industrial Engineering! #tobeapartner
From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection. We are known for developing extraordinary leaders who share this passion and are guided by their service to others.
Our Industrial Engineering team is responsible for designing and scaling physical store systems that improve the partner experience and unlock capacity across our retail footprint. We focus on translating ideas into real-world solutions-from early concept through full-scale implementation-while continuously optimizing how our stores operate. This role will play a critical leadership position within that mission.
As a Manager, Industrial Engineering, you will lead a team responsible for developing, scaling, and optimizing store systems, equipment, and operational processes. You will bridge strategy and execution-setting direction, aligning cross-functional partners, and ensuring the successful delivery of high-impact initiatives that improve store performance, partner experience, and customer outcomes.
This is a highly cross-functional, fast-paced role. You will partner closely with operations, store development, equipment engineering, product teams, and data science to bring solutions to life and scale them effectively across thousands of stores.
As a leader on the team, you will...
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, providing coaching, clear expectations, and fostering an inclusive, collaborative environment that drives strong results
  • Translate business priorities into actionable plans, structuring programs, resources, and timelines while removing barriers and driving execution against key outcomes
  • Deliver and scale store solutions by applying industrial engineering principles, data, and modeling (including CAD and simulation) to improve capacity, efficiency, and the partner experience
  • Drive cross-functional alignment and execution, connecting work across engineering, operations, and development teams, and ensuring ideas move effectively from concept through implementation
  • Define and translate complex business needs into clear requirements, enabling teams to solve problems, navigate trade-offs, and progress high-impact initiatives
  • Apply a data-driven, analytical mindset to identify opportunities, solve complex problems, and translate insights into scalable, real-world solutions
  • Shape continuous improvement strategies, identifying patterns, constraints, and opportunities across the system to inform long-term innovation and productivity gains

We'd love to hear from people with:
  • 7+ years' experience in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or related field
  • 7+ years of project/program management experience
  • Experience leading complex, cross-functional initiatives from pilot to large-scale implementation
  • Prior experience in retail, or store operations environments
  • Experience leading and developing teams

Core Skills & Capabilities
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills
  • Strong data-driven mindset, with experience using analytics, modeling, and research to inform decisions
  • Familiarity with engineering design and simulation tools (e.g., CAD, process modeling)
  • Ability to solve complex problems and drive solutions to completion
  • Proven ability to influence without authority in a matrixed organization
  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills across executive and technical audiences
  • Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, prioritize effectively, and drive results

As a Starbucks partner, you (and your family) will have access to medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, and other voluntary insurance benefits. Partners have access to short-term and long-term disability, paid parental leave, family expansion reimbursement, paid vacation from date of hire*, sick time (accrued at 1 hour for every 25 hours worked), eight paid holidays, and two personal days per year. Starbucks also offers eligible partners participation in a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, a discounted company stock program (S.I.P.), Starbucks equity program (Bean Stock), incentivized emergency savings, and financial well-being tools. Additionally, Starbucks offers 100% upfront tuition coverage for a first-time bachelor's degree through Arizona State University's online program via the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, student loan management resources, and access to other educational opportunities. You will also have access to backup care and DACA reimbursement. Starbucks will comply with any applicable state and local laws regarding employee leave benefits, including, but not limited to providing time off pursuant to the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, and in accordance with its plans and policies. This list is subject to change depending on collective bargaining in locations where partners have a certified bargaining representative. For additional information regarding partner perks and more detailed information about benefits, go to starbucksbenefits.com.
*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.
The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
We believe we do our best work when we're together, which is why we're onsite four days a week.
