AspectIndependent Contractor AccountantBookkeeper
CredentialsCPA or accounting certification often preferredNo formal certification typically required
Work EnvironmentFreelance, remote, or client-basedSmall business or office setting
Employer UsageHired by businesses for complex financial tasksManages day-to-day transaction recording

While both roles involve financial record-keeping, an Independent Contractor Accountant typically handles complex accounting tasks and may hold certifications like a CPA, working independently for multiple clients. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor Accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Accountant, you need strong accounting knowledge, attention to detail, and typically a degree in accounting or finance along with relevant certifications such as CPA. Familiarity with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Sage, as well as proficiency in spreadsheet tools, is essential for managing client accounts efficiently. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate financial services, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring compliance in a self-managed work environment.

What are some common challenges independent contractor accountants face when managing multiple clients?

Independent contractor accountants often juggle several clients simultaneously, which can make time management and organization crucial. Balancing varying accounting systems, deadlines, and client expectations requires strong communication and prioritization skills. Additionally, staying current with changes in tax laws and compliance regulations is essential to provide accurate advice and maintain trust. Many find using accounting software and setting clear boundaries with clients helps manage these challenges effectively.

What are Independent Contractor Accountants?

Independent Contractor Accountants are accounting professionals who work on a contract or freelance basis rather than as full-time employees. They provide a variety of accounting services such as bookkeeping, tax preparation, financial reporting, and consulting to businesses or individuals. Independent Contractor Accountants typically manage their own schedules, clients, and business operations, allowing for more flexibility and autonomy. They are responsible for their own taxes and must comply with relevant laws and regulations regarding independent contracting.

Job description

About MedCBO, Inc.
MedCBO is a Colorado-based healthcare business infrastructure company that empowers independent physician groups across the United States to launch, manage, and scale their practices. We provide a comprehensive Business-in-a-Box platform that integrates revenue cycle management, accounting and finance, human resources, EHR support, payer contracting, compliance, supply-chain logistics, and data intelligence.
Our unified, cloud-based system gives physicians the operational foundation they need to focus on patient care while maintaining full ownership and autonomy. MedCBO partners with practices of all sizes-including startups, rural clinics, and multi-specialty groups-to streamline operations, strengthen financial performance, and support long-term growth.
At MedCBO, our team is mission-driven, collaborative, and committed to improving healthcare through practical innovation and operational excellence. We value integrity, transparency, and a shared commitment to supporting independent medicine.
Job Title
Immunology Physician - Independent Practice Physician (Ownership Model, Not Employed)
Job Type
Independent Practice Opportunity
For Physicians Considering Practice Ownership
Many physicians want clinical autonomy but avoid private practice due to billing complexity, staffing risk, payer contracting, and administrative overhead. This opportunity is for physicians who want to practice independently while receiving structured operational support for the non-clinical business functions of their own practice. No prior business ownership experience is required.
Overview
This posting is for physicians interested in establishing or transitioning into an independently operated medical practice supported by MedCBO's administrative infrastructure. Physicians own and operate their own practice entity, while MedCBO provides non-clinical business and operational support services.
This is not an employed physician position. Physicians may establish or transition a practice in a preferred market, subject to state licensure and applicable regulatory requirements. The physician governs clinical operations, clinical decisions, and sets patient care policies. MedCBO does not direct patient care.
About MedCBO
MedCBO is a healthcare administrative services organization that supports physicians in operating independent medical practices across multiple U.S. markets. MedCBO's service model is structured to align with corporate practice of medicine (CPOM) principles. Physicians maintain ownership and clinical control of their medical entity while MedCBO provides non-clinical administrative and operational support.
MedCBO provides non-clinical services, including:
  • Revenue cycle management, coding, and payer contracting support
  • EHR, technology platform, telehealth, and clinical workflow systems
  • Credentialing, enrollments, and facility privileging coordination
  • Accounting, financial reporting, and practice financial infrastructure
  • HR administration, staffing workflows, and compliance support
  • Supply chain and vendor coordination

Physicians retain full clinical authority, decision-making, and ownership of the medical practice. Final legal structure and regulatory compliance depend on the specific state and are established in coordination with licensed legal counsel.
Opportunity Description
We work with physicians seeking to:
  • Start a new private practice
  • Transition from employment to ownership
  • Convert an existing practice to a supported model
  • Relocate and establish a practice in a new market

MedCBO supports administrative and operational functions while the physician independently operates the medical practice.
Physician Responsibilities
  • Provide care within the physician's specialty scope
  • Develop professional relationships within the medical community.
  • MedCBO coordinates payer credentialing with physician participation as required.
  • Determine clinical services offered
  • Manage clinical quality and patient experience

Administrative Support Provided by MedCBO
  • Practice formation coordination
  • Billing and collections management
  • Payer contract negotiation
  • Financial infrastructure and reporting
  • Operational workflows and staffing systems
  • Technology platform and implementation

Requirements
  • MD or DO with unrestricted license in good standing in the intended state of practice
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in a specialty appropriate to the clinical services provided
  • Eligible for hospital and/or facility privileges where applicable
  • Ability to obtain professional liability coverage at standard market rates
  • No current limitations, exclusions, or disciplinary restrictions that would prevent independent practice
  • Interest in the independent practice model

Preferred
  • Desire for practice ownership
  • Community-based care interest
  • Leadership or program development interest

Location
Multiple U.S. markets available (urban, suburban, and rural). Relocation and market selection are physician-directed, subject to licensure.
Compensation
Compensation is not a salary and is generated by the physician-owned practice. Financial outcomes vary based on specialty scope, services offered, payer mix, physician activity, and local market conditions. Results are not guaranteed.
Important Disclosure
Physicians operate their own medical practice entity and are not employees of MedCBO. MedCBO provides administrative support services only. Practice performance, revenue, and income depend on physician decisions, clinical activity, and market conditions. Practices are commonly established using standard medical practice financing programs; specific qualifications and terms are determined by the lending institution. MedCBO assists physicians in navigating financing options. MedCBO does not employ physicians and does not provide guaranteed income.
