Job description

This opportunity is exclusively available to individuals who have successfully completed the ATDM program. This position requires eligibility to access controlled unclassified information (CUI) and exportcontrolled data, and candidates must meet applicable federal requirements, including U.S. person status where required. This is an onsite position based in Danville, Virginia, and is not eligible for remote work.

About the Role
The CNC Machinist Intern position is designed for recent graduates of the ATDM CNC machining program who are beginning their careers in advanced manufacturing. This role supports CNC machining operations while providing opportunities to gain hands-on experience and develop advanced skills through mentoring and on-the-job training.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the operation of CNC equipment such as multi-axis milling machines, Wire EDM, tool pre-setters, and vertical band saws under the guidance of experienced machinists.
  • Support tracking and inventory of shop supplies, raw materials, and cutting tools.
  • Learn to perform inspections using basic precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.).
  • Follow safety protocols and comply with industry standards such as ITAR, ISO, and ANSI.
  • Participate in post-processing tasks including basic finishing of 3D-printed (AM) parts.
  • Assist with basic preventive maintenance routines on CNC machines.
  • Develop skills in CAD/CAM software to support CNC operations.
  • Collaborate with CMA staff and project teams to support machining projects.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support project and learning goals.

Work Location
We are looking for staff to work onsite in Danville, VA.   

The Ideal Candidate

  • Recent completion of Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing program
  • Basic understanding of CNC machining processes and machine tool operations.
  • Familiarity with shop math and blueprint reading.
  • Willingness to learn CAD/CAM and other manufacturing software.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and eagerness to develop technical skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work in a team, and communicate effectively.
  • Reliable and self-motivated with a commitment to safety and quality.

Physical Requirements:         

  • May sit or stand for long periods of time while completing duties
  • Must be able to move freely between facilities
  • Must be able to operate and manipulate a keyboard
  • May lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
