Cottage Hospital is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Controller to lead the financial operations of our Critical Access Hospital. This is an opportunity to step into a highly visible leadership role where your expertise will directly support patient care, operational excellence, and long-term financial sustainability.

Position Overview
The Controller oversees all financial activities within the organization and provides leadership to accounts payable, payroll, and general accounting functions. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, supports audit and regulatory requirements, and partners with hospital leadership to monitor financial performance and budget variances.
The Controller plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, supporting compliance, and ensuring financial transparency across departments.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise accounts payable, payroll, and general accounting staff
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes
  • Prepare and review financial statements and reporting packages
  • Support year-end audits and coordinate with external auditors
  • Conduct financial variance analysis and partner with department leaders
  • Assist in preparation of annual operating and capital budgets
  • Oversee preparation of Medicare Cost Reports, Disproportionate Share (DSH) audits, and Form 990 filings
  • Monitor financial controls and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Maintain knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party reimbursement structures
  • Support financial forecasting and performance analysis
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field required.
Experience
  • Experience in hospital financial management required
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial reporting
  • Experience working with external auditors
  • Experience supporting regulatory reporting requirements
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience strongly preferred
  • Critical Access Hospital experience a plus
