Ward 86, a renowned HIV Primary Care Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is actively seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Hospital Assistant. Under the supervision of the Practice Manager and in collaboration with our wonderful team of medical providers, nurses, and other health care professionals, you will play a crucial role in delivering care to patients at Ward 86 and affiliated clinical programs. Collaborating closely with clinical team members, you will actively contribute to the care of individuals living with HIV, people experiencing homelessness, people who use substances, and individuals with high psychosocial complexity. 

As a Hospital Assistant, you will optimize clinic flow and contribute to creating a patient-centered environment that addresses the unique needs of our diverse patient population. Your responsibilities will encompass both clinical and clerical duties, ensuring optimal care outcomes and supporting various functions across clinical programs. Working within a public health setting, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals from different backgrounds, providing them with inclusive and comprehensive care. Your role on the care team will be instrumental, encompassing a range of tasks such as conducting patient vitalization, blood and specimen collection and processing, performing health screenings, obtaining patient demographic information, assisting with patient flow, maintaining exam rooms, checking equipment for proper functioning, administering vaccinations, conducting inventory checks, and maintaining accurate records. Additionally, you may be involved in transporting patients and specimens between different areas on the ZSFG Campus.

Department Description:

Ward 86, the HIV/AIDS Clinic at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) campus, has been a leader and innovator in field of HIV care since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Ward 86 is the largest clinic providing primary medical care for people living with HIV in the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) and also provides preventive services to patients at-risk for HIV infection, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Ward 86 provides care to approximately 2400 patients living with HIV, with over 22,000 clinical encounters a year. Services are offered through a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach, addressing primary medical and HIV care, urgent care, mental health evaluation and treatment, substance use assessment, treatment and referrals, HIV prevention services, and HIV specialty care needs.

Required Qualifications:

• High School graduation and three years of appropriate experience, including one year of supervisory experience where applicable; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within 3 months of hire.
• Excellent Phlebotomy skills
• Must be well organized and detail oriented. Able to set priorities and follow through on assigned tasks
• Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities
• Basic mathematical / computational skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a busy team-oriented environment
• Ability to push/pull 50lbs or greater while performing patient transport (wheelchair) within ZSFG Campus
   

Preferred Qualifications:

• 2 years+ of experience working as a Medical Assistant
• Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program  
• Prior experience working in a primary care setting
• Experience working with patients living with HIV/AIDS
• Fluency in Spanish, ability to speak and communicate effectively with mono-lingual patients
• Familiar with electronic health record systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel
   

Required Certifications:

• Active and verifiable California Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT-1)
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within 3 months of hire

Primary Care Domain

• Obtain vital signs on patients including height and weight, blood pressure and pulse, temperature, pulse oximetry, and respiratory rate, and enter into electronic medical record system (Epic).
• Conduct various health screenings and enter data into Epic.
• Obtain demographic information and enter into Epic.
• Prep clinic exam rooms before, during, and after clinic sessions. 
• Assist with patient flow during clinic hours, room patients, monitor waiting room.
• Transport patients and specimens from clinic to locations within the hospital campus as directed and according to schedule.
• Conduct outreach phone calls as directed.
• Administer vaccinations as directed by Registered Nurses and/or Medical Providers and according to hospital policy.
• Prepare (scrub) patient charts in Epic and identify outstanding health care maintenance items prior to patient medical visits and format in an appropriate manner.

• React to identified health care maintenance gaps according to protocol and close out item.

Specialty Care Domain

• Set up equipment and supplies prior to each specialty care session as per needs of each individual specialty clinic specification. This includes: Anal Dysplasia Clinic, Gynecology Clinic, Infectious Disease Clinic, Pulmonology Clinic, Cardiology Clinic, Golden Compass, and other specialty clinics as directed.
• Clean up and stow away equipment and supplies after each specialty care session as per needs of specialty clinic specification. 
• Obtain vital signs on patients, including height and weight, blood pressure and pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate, and enter into Epic.
• Conduct various health screenings and enter data into Epic.
• Obtain demographic information and enter into Epic. 
• Assist with patient flow during clinic hours, room patients, monitor waiting room.
• Transport patients and specimens from clinic to locations within the hospital campus as directed and according to schedule.
• Assist Medical Providers as needed based on needs of specialty clinic.
• Drop off and pick up equipment to/from sterilization department according to schedule. Maintain a log of delivered/received equipment in binder.

Phlebotomy

• Obtain specimens for medical workups, including blood, stool, urine, saliva, and mucosal samples according to hospital policies and standard work.
• Perform venipuncture according to hospital policy and standard work. Instruct patients about self-collection of specimens as indicated.
• Follow hospital policies when collecting, receiving, and handling specimens.
• Adhere to specimen tube and volume requirements and ensure proper specimen labeling according to policies and standard work.
• Use established venipuncture procedures including venipuncture site identification and preparation. Use appropriate equipment and follow post-venipuncture policies and standard work. 
• Collect appropriate specimens for blood culture including AFB, fungal or viral analysis. Select sites and prepare the site as appropriate for blood culture collection.
• Use safety collection devices and adhere policies regarding health and safety requirements.
• Process resistance testing: complete the blood draw and prepare necessary paperwork.
• Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure adequate stock of laboratory supplies are available, and perform inventory check according to schedule.
• Maintain daily lab activity logs, specimen-banking logs, send-out logs, and computer databases for both clinical and research activities as assigned.
• Ensure all STAT/routine specimens are picked up and delivered to laboratories in a timely manner according to policy. Transport stat labs as directed and according to schedule.
• Perform point of care testing as per hospital policy and scope.
• Perform and maintain daily point of care testing calibration as directed.
• Maintain annual certification for point of care testing.

Environment of Care and Administrative Domain

• Restock and maintain exam rooms during clinic opening hours, including restocking of supplies, checking functionality of equipment, notifying charge nurse about faulty equipment, changing soiled linen bags, and preparing exam rooms between patients according to schedule.
• Monitor and work Epic work queues, pools, and other primary care related items. Follow up on medical orders, monitor incoming fax queue, prepare orders for wet or electronic signature, and perform other administrative functions as assigned.
• Take inventory, fill out requisitions, re-stock shelves and room with supplies on an ongoing basis and according to schedule.

• Keep clinic tidy, including exam rooms, waiting room, hallways, and lab, and notify porters if a cleanup is needed or trash needs emptying.

Supply ordering (for incumbents with ordering privileges)

• Maintain a list of supplies needed for both primary care and specialty care clinics. 
• Identify and document when stock of supplies is low and in need of ordering. Check inventory according to schedule
• Order supplies for clinic as per schedule and as directed. Maintain a log of orders and deliveries.
