Ward 86, a renowned HIV Primary Care Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is actively seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Hospital Assistant. In this impactful role, you will have the opportunity to provide exceptional care and support to a diverse patient population, making a meaningful difference in their lives. Under the supervision of the Practice Manager and in collaboration with our wonderful team of medical providers, nurses, and other health care professionals, you will play a crucial role in delivering care to patients at Ward 86 and affiliated clinical programs. Collaborating closely with clinical team members, you will actively contribute to the care of individuals living with HIV, people experiencing homelessness, people who use substances, and individuals with high psychosocial complexity.Â
As a Hospital Assistant, you will optimize clinic flow and contribute to creating a patient-centered environment that addresses the unique needs of our diverse patient population. Your responsibilities will encompass both clinical and clerical duties, ensuring optimal care outcomes and supporting various functions across clinical programs. Working within a public health setting, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals from different backgrounds, providing them with inclusive and comprehensive care. Your role on the care team will be instrumental, encompassing a range of tasks such as conducting patient vitalization, blood and specimen collection and processing, performing health screenings, obtaining patient demographic information, assisting with patient flow, maintaining exam rooms, checking equipment for proper functioning, administering vaccinations, conducting inventory checks, and maintaining accurate records. Additionally, you may be involved in transporting patients and specimens between different areas on the ZSFG Campus.

Department Description:
Ward 86, the HIV/AIDS Clinic at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) campus, has been a leader and innovator in field of HIV care since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Ward 86 is the largest clinic providing primary medical care for people living with HIV in the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) and also provides preventive services to patients at-risk for HIV infection, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Ward 86 provides care to approximately 2400 patients living with HIV, with over 22,000 clinical encounters a year. Services are offered through a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach, addressing primary medical and HIV care, urgent care, mental health evaluation and treatment, substance use assessment, treatment and referrals, HIV prevention services, and HIV specialty care needs.
Required Qualifications:
- High School graduation and three years of appropriate experience, including one year of supervisory experience where applicable; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within 3 months of hire.
- Excellent Phlebotomy skills
- Must be well organized and detail oriented. Able to set priorities and follow through on assigned tasks
- Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to job responsibilities
- Basic mathematical / computational skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a busy team-oriented environment

Phlebotomy
- Obtain specimens for medical workups, including blood, stool, urine, saliva, and mucosal samples according to hospital policies and standard work.
- Perform venipuncture according to hospital policy and standard work. Instruct patients about self-collection of specimens as indicated.
- Follow hospital policies when collecting, receiving, and handling specimens.
- Adhere to specimen tube and volume requirements and ensure proper specimen labeling according to policies and standard work.
- Use established venipuncture procedures including venipuncture site identification and preparation. Use appropriate equipment and follow post-venipuncture policies and standard work.Â
- Collect appropriate specimens for blood culture including AFB, fungal or viral analysis. Select sites and prepare the site as appropriate for blood culture collection.
- Use safety collection devices and adhere policies regarding health and safety requirements.
- Process resistance testing: complete the blood draw and prepare necessary paperwork.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensure adequate stock of laboratory supplies are available, and perform inventory check according to schedule.
