What is a home based VB6 developer?

Home Based VB6 Developers are software professionals who specialize in developing and maintaining applications using Microsoft Visual Basic 6 (VB6) while working remotely from their own location, typically their home. They are responsible for designing, coding, testing, and debugging VB6 applications, often for legacy systems that still rely on this technology. These developers may work as freelancers, contractors, or remote employees for companies that need to update or support older software systems. Home based roles offer flexibility but also require self-motivation, reliable internet access, and strong communication skills to collaborate with clients or teams remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a home based VB6 developer?

To thrive as a Home Based VB6 Developer, you need proficiency in Visual Basic 6 programming, a solid understanding of software engineering principles, and experience with legacy systems. Familiarity with version control tools, debugging utilities, and integration with databases like SQL Server or Access is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective communication are vital soft skills for remote collaboration and independent work. These skills ensure efficient maintenance and enhancement of legacy applications while meeting project requirements in a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by home based VB6 developers, and how can they be addressed?

Home-based VB6 developers often encounter challenges such as limited access to legacy documentation, difficulties in testing applications across diverse environments, and occasional isolation from team communication. To address these, developers should proactively document their work, utilize virtual machines for varied testing scenarios, and participate in regular video meetings or chat channels to stay connected with their team. Leveraging online forums and legacy code repositories can also provide valuable support for troubleshooting and professional growth.

Job description

Description:

Position Overview

The Senior Sage 300 Developer is a senior specialist IC role aligned with the Senior Software Engineer level. This role owns the full Sage 300 ERP ecosystem — custom development, complex integrations, SQL database design, and business reporting — bridging legacy VB6 and modern C#/.NET environments. The ideal candidate takes full end-to-end ownership of deliverables, combines deep technical expertise with strong cross-functional collaboration, and consistently delivers reliable, high-quality ERP solutions that drive operational efficiency and business success.

Our Hybrid Work Program: To create vibrancy and foster collaboration, while providing for hours spent working from home, we have implemented a hybrid work schedule. We work from the office in Poway on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Fridays are spent working from home. Team members can always work more hours in the office, if they choose.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support custom Sage 300 ERP solutions — including macros, customizations, and enhancements.
  • Build and maintain .NET applications using the Sage 300 COM API; develop Python-based solutions within Orchid Extender and related frameworks.
  • Maintain, enhance, and support existing VB6 components; migrate to .NET where appropriate and feasible.
  • Design and support complex integrations between Sage 300 and third-party systems — including CRM, eCommerce, WMS, shipping, payment gateways, and cloud services — using REST APIs, Swagger/OpenAPI, and data synchronization technologies.
  • Design, optimize, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases including stored procedures, views, functions, and complex queries with a focus on performance tuning.
  • Build and maintain custom reports, dashboards, and BI solutions using Crystal Reports and Sage Intelligence.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams — including business stakeholders, finance, operations, IT, and vendors — to gather requirements, define solutions, and drive effective delivery.
  • Participate in solution architecture discussions and provide practical, scalable technical recommendations aligned with business needs.
  • Conduct code reviews, mentor junior developers, and uphold development standards and best practices.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for automation, process improvement, and system optimization.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation, integration specifications, and support documentation.
  • Provide production support, resolve critical business issues, and take full ownership of deliverables from design through post-production.
  • Stay current with Sage 300 technologies, integration tools, and industry best practices.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 7+ years of professional software development experience with significant, hands-on Sage 300 ERP expertise — including expert-level knowledge of the COM API, Web APIs, and core ERP architecture and modules.
  • Advanced proficiency in VB6 (legacy maintenance), C# / .NET Framework (new development), and Python for Orchid Extender and Sage 300-related frameworks.
  • Advanced expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, stored procedures, and database design, with a strong foundation in software architecture, integration methodologies, and performance optimization.
  • Proven experience designing and delivering enterprise integrations between Sage 300 and third-party systems — including CRM, eCommerce, WMS, shipping, financial, and payment platforms — using REST APIs, Swagger/OpenAPI, and data synchronization technologies.
  • Experience building custom reporting and BI solutions using Crystal Reports and/or Sage Intelligence.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Preferred: Experience in manufacturing, distribution, wholesale, or retail ERP environments; familiarity with cloud platforms, modern integration architectures, source control (Git), and VB6-to-.NET migration.

Technical Skills

  • Sage 300 ERP: COM API, Web APIs, Macros, Orchid Extender — expert level; custom reporting and BI using Crystal Reports and Sage Intelligence.
  • Languages: VB6 (legacy maintenance), C# / .NET Framework (new development), Python.
  • Database: Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, stored procedures, views, performance tuning, and database design.
  • Integrations: REST APIs, Swagger/OpenAPI, JSON, XML, third-party APIs, and data synchronization technologies.
  • Tools & Practices: Source control (Git preferred), CI/CD familiarity, and technical documentation.

Leadership & Soft Skills

  • Ownership & Accountability: Takes end-to-end responsibility for deliverables, consistently delivering high-quality, scalable, and maintainable solutions with minimal rework.
  • Technical Leadership: Mentors junior developers, drives engineering standards and best practices, and contributes to architectural decisions across the team.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Bridges technical and business audiences effectively — communicates clearly with stakeholders at all levels and works well across cross-functional teams.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate complex business needs into practical technical solutions and proactively identify risks before they escalate.
  • Adaptability: Self-motivated and comfortable operating in legacy-modern hybrid environments, with a pragmatic approach to when to modernize vs. maintain and a continuous drive to learn new technologies.
