To thrive as a Governess, you need a strong background in education or child development, a high level of academic competency, and relevant qualifications such as a degree in teaching or childcare. What is a Governess job?

A governess is a professional educator hired to provide private tutoring and academic support to children, typically in a household setting. Unlike a nanny, whose primary role is childcare, a governess focuses on education, teaching subjects, manners, and life skills. Governesses may work with children of various ages, tailoring lessons to their needs and assisting with schoolwork. They are often employed by high-profile or affluent families who seek individualized instruction for their children.

What are the typical work arrangements and hours for a Governess position?

Most Governess positions involve full-time, live-in, or live-out arrangements, often with a set schedule that aligns with children's educational and extracurricular routines. The work may include weekends or travel depending on the family's needs and may also require flexibility for school holidays or special events. Governesses typically work closely with parents and other household staff to coordinate educational activities, routines, and discipline strategies. Understanding the expected hours and responsibilities can help you determine if the role suits your lifestyle and commitments.

A professional family is seeking an exceptional full-time Governess / Household Manager to become a steady, nurturing presence for two wonderful girls during a deeply transitional season for their family. This role is ideal for a warm, capable professional who embodies the heart of a nurturing mother, values education, and desires to make a meaningful, long-term impact in children’s lives.

About the Family

  • Children: Two sweet girls ages 8 and 6
  • The family will soon be navigating the loss of their mother to cancer.
  • Father is a busy professional who travels frequently and is seeking a trusted partner in the home to provide consistency, emotional support, and guidance for his daughters.

  • Academic support and school engagement
  • Emotional nurturing and role modeling
  • Social and activity coordination
  • Creating a calm, loving, and well-organized home environment

This is not a typical nanny role—it is a Mary Poppins gold-standard position for someone who leads with heart, structure, and grace.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Mornings (school preparation and household oversight)
  • Afternoons: 2:00 PM – 7:00 PM
  • Flexibility required for overnight stays when father is traveling
  • Live-in or Live-out options available
  • Pay: $25–$27 per hour (based on experience)

Key Responsibilities

Child-Focused Responsibilities

  • Serve as a loving, steady role model and emotional support for both girls
  • Emphasis on school success and academic enrichment
  • Assist with homework, school projects, and learning organization
  • Coordinate extracurricular activities, playdates, and transportation
  • Prepare nutritious meals and snacks for the children
  • Participate in school communication, “mom chats,” and school community involvement
  • Foster social skills, confidence, kindness, and emotional resilience

Household & Family Support

  • Manage children’s schedules, calendars, and activity logistics
  • Coordinate with school, tutors, and activity providers
  • Maintain organized routines and systems within the home
  • Support a peaceful, structured environment during father’s travel
  • Provide continuity, reassurance, and warmth during a time of change

Ideal Candidate

  • Naturally nurturing, calm, and emotionally attuned
  • Strong background in childcare, education, or household management
  • Values structure, routines, and academic excellence
  • Comfortable stepping into a maternal-style leadership role
  • Emotionally mature and compassionate
  • Shares Christian values
  • Reliable, discreet, and deeply committed to the well-being of the children
  • Able to form meaningful, long-term bonds with the family

This Role Is for Someone Who…

  • Feels called to support children through meaningful life transitions
  • Finds purpose in being a positive, guiding presence
  • Takes pride in helping children feel safe, supported, and capable
  • Understands that love, consistency, and education change lives
