What is full desk recruiting?

Full Desk Recruiting is a staffing model where a recruiter manages both the client (employer) and candidate sides of the recruiting process. This means they are responsible for sourcing and screening candidates, as well as building relationships with clients, understanding their hiring needs, and negotiating job offers. Unlike specialized roles where recruiting and sales are separate, full desk recruiters handle the entire cycle from business development to placement. This approach allows for more personalized service and greater control over the hiring process. It can be challenging but often leads to stronger client and candidate relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full desk recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Desk Recruiter, you need strong sales acumen, talent sourcing abilities, and a solid understanding of recruitment processes, often supported by a bachelor's degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), CRM software, and sourcing platforms like LinkedIn Recruiter is essential. Outstanding communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for effectively managing both client and candidate relationships, ensuring successful placements, and driving business growth.

What are some common challenges faced by full desk recruiters, and how can they be addressed?

Full Desk Recruiters often juggle both client acquisition and candidate management, which can make time management and prioritization challenging. Balancing the needs of multiple clients while sourcing high-quality candidates requires effective organizational skills and clear communication. Building strong relationships with both clients and candidates is key, as is staying adaptable to changing job market trends. Utilizing applicant tracking systems and setting realistic daily goals can help streamline workflows and ensure success in this multifaceted role.

What is the difference between Full Desk Recruiting vs Staffing Agency Recruiter?

AspectFull Desk RecruitingStaffing Agency Recruiter
ResponsibilitiesEnd-to-end recruitment, client management, candidate sourcing, negotiationsCandidate sourcing, screening, placement, often on a temporary basis
Work EnvironmentIndependent or agency-based, client-focused, often project-drivenAgency office, high-volume, fast-paced
CredentialsRecruitment experience, industry knowledge, strong communication skillsSimilar credentials, often with staffing certifications

Full Desk Recruiting involves managing the entire hiring process for clients, including business development and candidate placement. Staffing Agency Recruiters typically focus on sourcing and placing candidates, often for temporary roles. Both roles require recruitment skills, but Full Desk Recruiters handle more client relationships and strategic responsibilities.

How to become a full desk recruiter?

To become a full desk recruiter, gain experience in recruiting or sales, develop strong communication and negotiation skills, and understand the full recruitment process from sourcing to placement. Many successful recruiters also learn to use applicant tracking systems (ATS) and build a network of industry contacts. Typically, entry-level roles or internships provide a pathway into full desk recruiting positions.

What does a full desk recruiting do?

A full desk recruiter manages the entire hiring process for a specific set of roles, including sourcing candidates, conducting interviews, and making offers. They handle both client relationships and candidate pipelines, often working independently and using applicant tracking systems to streamline recruitment activities.

Job description

Recruitment Consultant โ€“ Brunel Mining Team - Houston, TX

This isnโ€™t high-volume recruiting. This is technical, relationship-driven project staffing in one of the most exciting and lucrative verticals out there: Mining!

Our Mining Team is growing fast and weโ€™re looking for a driven Recruitment Consultant who thrives in complex searches, understands project environments, and wants to build a long-term desk with serious upside.

Why this role hits different

  • Youโ€™ll recruit highly skilled project professionals (including Project Controls, Engineering, Construction, Commissioning and much more).
  • Youโ€™ll work closely with Account Managers and clients on real, active projects.
  • Youโ€™ll build a technical niche instead of chasing volume.
  • Youโ€™ll earn on long-term contract placements, not quick churn.
  • Youโ€™ll be part of a high-performing, specialized recruitment team.
  • Youโ€™ll work both contract and direct vacancies.

What youโ€™ll do

  • Partner with Account Managers and clients to understand project hiring needs.
  • Source talent using creative, direct, and relationship-based recruiting.
  • Screen, interview, and qualify candidates for technical and cultural fit.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of mining, EPC, and construction professionals.
  • Support contractor onboarding, ongoing care, and redeployment.
  • Hit (and exceed) recruitment targets while building a sustainable desk.

What weโ€™re looking for

  • Minimum 1 year experience in project staffing recruitment with a background or exposure to EPC, construction, engineering, or mining strongly preferred.
  • Confident communicator who can build trust quickly and work in a team environment.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset who is competitive, self-driven, reliable and comfortable owning your results.
  • Energized by complex searches, recruiting for best fit talent vs. high volume submittals.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. for any employer without the need for sponsorship.

Why Brunel

Brunel is a global leader in engineering, construction, and project staffing. We operate where projects are complex, timelines matter, and relationships are everything. If you want to move beyond transactional recruiting and into high-impact, technical staffing, this is the seat.

Offer โ€“

Full benefits offered with Medical, Dental and Vision effective on your first day. Additional benefits include 401K matching, Roth, HSA, generous PTO package and holidays and much more.
