What is a freelance intern?

A Freelance Intern is a student or recent graduate who gains practical work experience by taking on freelance assignments rather than working in a traditional internship setting. Unlike standard interns who may work for a single company, freelance interns work independently on projects for various clients or organizations. This arrangement allows them to build a diverse portfolio, develop a wide range of skills, and gain exposure to different industries. Freelance internships can often be remote and offer flexible schedules, making them a popular choice for those seeking hands-on experience while maintaining autonomy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Intern, you need foundational knowledge in your field of interest, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently, typically supported by relevant coursework or early professional experiences. Familiarity with common project management tools (like Trello or Asana), communication platforms (such as Slack), and proficiency in Microsoft Office or Google Workspace are typically expected. Proactive communication, adaptability, and self-motivation are standout soft skills for navigating remote or varied assignments. These skills and qualities are essential for managing diverse tasks, meeting deadlines, and building a positive reputation in a flexible work environment.

What are some common challenges freelance interns face, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance interns often navigate challenges such as managing multiple projects for different clients, maintaining clear communication with remote teams, and balancing their workload alongside learning new skills. Setting clear expectations at the start of each project and using project management tools can help keep tasks organized. Proactively reaching out for feedback and scheduling regular check-ins with supervisors also supports a successful internship experience and professional growth.

Job description

Praytell is a creative communications agency made up of strategic minds, spirited hearts and people with a strong instinctive recoil from anything remotely boring. We create culture-driven, integrated work that earns attention, sparks conversation and makes people… well, give a shit. But more than that, we’re a team of curious builders, thoughtful challengers and collaborative problem-solvers who believe the best work starts with a simple question: what if we?

What if we pushed the idea further? Solved the problem differently? Built something better?

Our work moves fast, evolves constantly and rarely fits neatly inside a box - which is exactly how we like it. The people who thrive here ask questions, chase ideas, spot opportunities and care enough to go beyond the brief. They don’t wait for a perfect roadmap or a tap on the shoulder - they’re energized by figuring things out, making things better and helping shape what comes next.

We hold ourselves to a high bar, but we’re not pretending to be a perfect agency filled with perfect people doing perfect work 100% of the time. We’re humans. Sometimes the work runs late. Sometimes the process is still being built. Sometimes there isn’t a policy, playbook or perfect answer for every little thing. What we do have is a genuine commitment to getting better - evolving how we work, support our people and build the kind of agency we want to be, together.

So that’s our promise to you. If curiosity drives you, ownership excites you and “what if we?” feels more like a life mantra than a question - we’d love to hear from you.

The Opportunity

Overview:

  • Dates: Tuesday, September 8 - Friday, February 26 (six-month internship)
  • Hours: Monday - Friday, 9am - 6pm local time, with a commitment of 40 hours/week
  • Location: Chicago or New York. This is a hybrid role, with interns expected to work from the office approximately once per week and attend in-person client events, activations or team needs as they come up.
  • Pay: $19/hour, with overtime eligibility
  • Benefits: Since you're expected to work more than 30 hours/week, you will be eligible for medical insurance. You will also receive 40 hours of paid sick time, which will be frontloaded at the start of your employment.
  • Commitment: This is designed as a full-time internship, so candidates should be available during standard business hours throughout the six-month program
  • Post-Internship: While there may be an opportunity to transition into a full-time role following the internship, it is not guaranteed and will depend on individual performance and company needs

As a Creator Intern, you will:

  • Support social and creative teams across a range of brands and industries
  • Help create social-first content for platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and emerging channels
  • Assist with designing and editing social content, including static graphics, short-form video, Reels, TikToks and other platform-native content
  • Take a first pass at social copy, captions, headlines and other short-form creative
  • Keep a pulse on social trends, memes, creators, sounds and cultural conversations to help spot opportunities for brands
  • Contribute ideas during brainstorms for social content, campaigns, activations and real-time cultural moments
  • Support content shoots from prep through production, including shot lists, props, filming and capturing behind-the-scenes content
  • Help edit and adapt content for different social platforms, formats and audiences
  • Research brands, competitors, creators and emerging trends to help inspire new creative ideas
  • Support social content calendars and help keep creative assets, feedback and deliverables organized
  • Participate in creative reviews, client calls and internal team meetings
  • Incorporate team feedback into copy, designs and content while learning how creative work evolves from idea to final execution
  • Collaborate with teammates across departments, including Integrated Communications, Influencer, Creative and Strategy to learn how integrated campaigns come together
  • Jump into other creative and strategy-related projects and opportunities based on client and team needs
What You Bring
  • No prior professional experience required! We’re looking for curious, creative people who are excited to learn, make things and get hands-on experience creating content for real brands. Previous internships, freelance work, relevant coursework or personal creative projects are a plus, but not required.
  • You’re a recent graduate or early in your career and looking to build real-world experience in social media and content creation
  • You genuinely love social media and understand what feels native, current and worth paying attention to across platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube
  • You have an eye for what makes great social content, from visuals and editing to copy, tone and storytelling
  • You’re comfortable creating content yourself, whether that’s filming, editing, designing, writing or experimenting with new formats
  • You’re comfortable using creative tools like Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut and other editing and design platforms to bring social content to life
  • You’re comfortable behind the camera and open to appearing in content when it makes sense
  • You’re curious about brands, creators, internet culture and what’s happening online and IRL
  • You’re collaborative, organized and comfortable juggling multiple projects and priorities
  • You’re eager to learn, take feedback, contribute ideas and try things you haven’t done before
  • You’re able to commit to the full six-month internship and 40-hour workweek
