What is a freelance customer success?

A Freelance Customer Success professional is an independent contractor who works with companies to help their customers achieve desired outcomes with a product or service. They focus on building strong relationships, addressing customer concerns, onboarding new clients, and ensuring satisfaction and retention. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers work on a project or contract basis and may support multiple clients at once. Their responsibilities can include providing support, conducting training sessions, gathering feedback, and collaborating with internal teams to improve the customer experience.

How do freelance customer success professionals typically collaborate with client teams?

Freelance customer success professionals often work remotely and integrate with client teams through regular virtual meetings, email updates, and shared project management tools. While they may not be on-site, they are expected to maintain close communication with account managers, support agents, and product teams to ensure customer goals are met. Building strong relationships and a clear understanding of client processes is key to aligning on objectives and delivering value. Effective freelancers are proactive in reaching out and providing insights, often acting as both advocates for the customer and liaisons to internal stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance customer success, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Customer Success Specialist, you need a solid understanding of customer relationship management, onboarding strategies, and industry-specific knowledge, often supported by experience with SaaS products or client-facing roles. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce or HubSpot, as well as customer support tools such as Zendesk or Intercom, is typically required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving abilities, and proactive client engagement are soft skills that set top performers apart. These capabilities ensure clients achieve their goals, drive retention, and foster long-term business partnerships in a dynamic, remote work environment.

Job description

Website: https://thegsdsoftware.com/

GSD is looking for an exceptional Email Copywriter & Email Marketing Strategist to help us develop and write ongoing email campaigns in the voice of our founder, Makenna Riley.

This is not a role for someone who simply waits for a topic, writes an email, and moves on.

We are looking for someone who understands copywriting, marketing strategy, customer psychology, storytelling, positioning, and conversion — and can help lead the email strategy alongside our team.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll primarily be responsible for writing approximately 2–3 emails per week to our audience.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Writing emails in Makenna Riley's voice and style
  • Developing weekly and monthly email angles and campaign ideas
  • Strategizing what we should send, when we should send it, and why
  • Writing educational, story-based, promotional, nurture, and conversion-focused emails
  • Turning ideas, stories, offers, customer problems, and company updates into compelling emails
  • Understanding our different products and determining how to naturally position them within our email marketing
  • Helping plan launches, promotions, nurture campaigns, and ongoing broadcasts
  • Reviewing email performance and helping improve future strategy
  • Developing stronger hooks, subject lines, CTAs, storytelling, and offers
  • Working directly with our team to understand what is happening inside the business and translate that into effective marketing

Who We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who is already a strong copywriter and marketer.

You should understand that great email marketing is about much more than putting words on a page.

You should be able to look at a business, its audience, its offers, and its goals and say:

"Here's what I think we should email about this week, here's the angle I would use, and here's why."

The ideal person has:

  • Exceptional direct-response copywriting skills
  • Strong understanding of email marketing strategy
  • Strong storytelling ability
  • Knowledge of customer psychology and buying behavior
  • Experience writing emails that generate clicks, replies, sales, and engagement
  • The ability to learn and consistently replicate a founder's voice
  • Experience developing campaign concepts rather than simply executing assignments
  • Strong marketing instincts and an understanding of positioning and offers
  • The ability to work independently and bring ideas to the table
  • Experience studying email performance and using the data to improve future campaigns

About GSD

GSD helps entrepreneurs build, launch, market, and grow their businesses using software, AI, education, and done-for-you services.

Our audience includes entrepreneurs, coaches, consultants, creators, and service-based business owners who want to simplify their technology, marketing, and operations.

You can learn more about the company here:

What This Role Is NOT

We are not looking for a basic content writer or someone who needs every email completely mapped out before they can begin writing.

Makenna and our team can provide direction, stories, ideas, launches, and business context, but we want someone who can take that information and think strategically.

We want someone who will challenge ideas, suggest better angles, identify opportunities, and help make email one of the strongest marketing channels inside GSD.

How to Apply

Please send us:

A short introduction about yourself and your email marketing experience

Examples of email copy you've written

Examples of campaigns or email strategies you've helped develop

Any measurable results you can share

A brief explanation of how you approach learning and writing in a founder's voice

Bonus: Review our website and include 2–3 email ideas you would potentially send to the GSD audience and explain why you chose them.

We're looking for someone who can become a long-term strategic partner to the GSD team — not simply another freelance writer.
