ELLE is looking for a culture editor who can helm the brand's culture section, including celebrity and entertainment coverage of movies and TV, books, theater, food, and fine arts. This position will oversee all day-to-day operations critical to the brand's culture strategy. The ideal candidate is a savvy writer and editor who is plugged in and knows how to use CMS platforms and has experience targeting large audiences and producing creative and original content.
- 6+ years of post-grad experience, preferably for a consumer editorial brand
- Strong editorial judgment and clean writing skills
- Keen understanding of the brand's voice
- Must love spotting the newest voices in culture
- Proficiency with web platforms (including emerging platforms) and tools (including Google Analytics)
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Able to work nights and weekends as needed
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or other relevant area
- Assign, edit, and top-edit stories for the culture section, including daily news and awards coverage
- Plan coverage around weekly TV, film, music, and book releases and tentpole pop culture moments
- Book talent for interviews, video shoots, social opportunities, or other stories
- Work with print editors for long-lead features or collaborating on online coverage
- Work with freelancers for evergreen stories, interviews, essays, roundups, and more
- Work with SEO team to optimize content strategy and plan swarms
- Develop and maintain PR relationships with celebrity reps, major studios, and labels
- Attend film events and red carpets for coverage

Key Responsibilities (What You Are Doing)
- Assign, edit, and top-edit stories across the culture vertical, including daily news, awards coverage, and breaking entertainment stories.
- Plan and execute editorial coverage around weekly television, film, music, and book releases, as well as major pop culture moments.
- Book talent for interviews, video shoots, social content, and other editorial opportunities.
- Partner with print editors to develop long-lead features and collaborate on cross-platform storytelling.
- Manage freelance contributors for evergreen features, interviews, essays, roundups, and other culture content.
- Collaborate with the SEO team to optimize editorial strategy, identify content opportunities, and plan search-driven coverage swarms.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with publicists, celebrity representatives, major studios, and record labels.
- Attend film screenings, industry events, premieres, and red carpets to produce timely, engaging coverage.
Qualifications (What We're Looking For)
- 6+ years of editorial experience, preferably with a consumer-facing editorial brand.
- Strong editorial judgment with exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Deep understanding of ELLE's editorial voice and audience.
- Passion for discovering emerging voices, trends, and conversations shaping culture.
- Experience using digital publishing platforms, content management systems, Google Analytics, and emerging editorial tools.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative newsroom while managing multiple priorities.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for breaking news and major entertainment events.
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- This is a hybrid role based in New York City, with an expectation of working in the office 4 days per week.
The hourly rate for this role is $35.00 per hour. This position is not eligible for bonus or commission compensation. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
